RUNANGA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Mr W. Smith, Junr., who met with a severe injury last February at Rapahoe from the effects of a motor accident, was home for the week-end. AU hope to see Bill permanently discharged from tbe Grey Hospital as he is making good progress. Mr Andy Devine, who has been removed to the Grey River Hospital, is making slow progess. Our local cricketers have two teams in competitions and are expected to be in the running ere the season closes. Some of the younger members are showing promise of turning out firstclass cricketers. More will be heard of these boys as. the season advnaees. Several local racing enthusiasts are a- Christchurch ajttending the carnival in order to endeavour to balance their household budgets. It ft to be hoped that they are successful. A very pleasant afternoon was spent On -the Runanga tennis courts on Saturday afternoon in very pleasant weather. A local championship was held, which was won by Mrs R. M. Spiers (taking the place of a gentleman), and Mrs C. O’Neill. Afternoon tea wa s served and greatly enjoyed. The courts are proving a great attraction wi h the coming of [the fine weather. The Croquet Club members are also participating freely i n their games, and before long their courts will require to be extended in order to cope with the increasing membership. As several trophies are to be competed for 'this season some keen games will eventua-e. The bowling green is in first-class order and is a credit to the members. Sonic very . iitteresting games have been played, and given a fine season, this green will prove equal to anything in New Zealand.

The Runanga Bowling Club tendered a social and presentation to Mr and Mrs J’. Chambers, in the Pavilion on Saturday evening, the President, Mr F. G. Pope presiding. After the toast “Our Noble Selves,” a song “Comrade,” was sung by Mr J. Price, and community singing was led by Mr D Barnes. After a recitation “Young Williams,” by Mr J. Price, the President spoke on the Club losing a good member and a good bowler, and sympathised with Mr Chambers on hisad accident, which necefsita-ed his having to bq transferred to another place, also Mrs Chambers, who, having been on (he Ladies-’ Committee, had done yeoman service for the Club. He wished Mrs Chambers, who at present is iji the hospital through sickness, a speedy recovery. He asked Mr Chambers to accept on behalf of the members a walking stick and for Mrs u crystal rose bowl, wishing them both better luck and health in the future,’ and hoping to , SC( . them again on the Coast. Mr J. Price eu dorsed the Chairman’s remarks, and spoke of the high esteem in which the members hell At Chambers.. The champion rink would now require a third and one would be hard to find as good as Air Chambers. Mr T. Bowes spoke on behalf of the champion rink, and asked Air Chambers to accept a travelling bag o u behalf of the rink. Airs Chambers as one of the Ladies’ Committee had done excellent work. Air Bowes remarked on Afr Chambers’ ability as a bowler and wished the same rink could have attended the Championships in January at Christ church. He wished them both bon voyage with the best of luck and health. Mr Barnes responded on behalf of the “Coon Can Ch ampions, ’ ’ and remarked that a new champion would be required now. He washed them the best of luck on (their transfer -0 Christchurch. Mr Leach and Mr Uinvin also spoke on behalf of the champion ring. The following songs were given:—“Sweet Bye and Bye,” Mr W. Warburton; “The Song That Reached My Heart.” Mr D. Barnes; “I Cau’t Change It,” Mr W. Warburton; and a recitation “Poof, Again,” by Mr Price, Mr Chambers, on rising to reply was greeted by hearty cheers. He stated he had enjoyed his stay in Runanga and wherever he had been he had not met as good fellows as there, both in sport and fellow-ship. He wished the Club the success it had earned and hoped to see the r j n k cup won again by Runanga next year. If at any (time any of the bowlers were in Christchurch he wished them to call and extended a hearty invitation to all. He thanked them for the very fine presents, and wished Mrs Chambers had been there to reply. He would always remember the happy days spent on (the green. The members then toasted Mr and Mrs Chambers and sang “For They are Jolly Good Fellows ’’ Other items were:—Song, “The Upper Ten,” Mr W. Murphv; song, “Rolling Home,” Mr N. Leach; recitation, “Promotion.” Mr J. Price A very pleasant evening camo to ? close with the singing of “Auld Bang Syne.”

Mr and Mrs J. Forrest. Mrs W h isher and Mrs J- Kennedy are visiting Christchurch. At the School Committee meeting the Board sent five names for the position of Assistant Mistress. The Committee recommended the appointment of Miss Olive M. Duff. It was decided to lay a concrete eriekejt pitch tn tho school grounds, also- to recondition the basketball court. The Headmaster’s report stated:—Roll: Bovs 156: girls 129; total 285. During October live pupils were admitted and three withdrawn.
