Metcalfe, a jockey who was badly hurt when his mount, fell in the finish of the Linwood Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, had improved to-day, but was still serious. Wlien Countermarch fell. Peter Jackson, ridden by H. Stoek’oy, cam? down over him .and Sharpthor n also lost his rider, I. Tilson M?tcalfe fell heavily and was struck by the feet of the galloping horses, suffering grave head injuries, the worst being the. fracture at the base of the skull.
