The Canterbury Jockey Club’s Metropolitan meeting opened to-day in glorious weather, the .track being very fast, after a prolonged spell of dry weather. The attendance was good. The tote handled £34,417. compared with £48,6744 last year. Results: — Spring Hurdle Handicap, of two miles.—s LANDMARK (Miles) 1,2 Captain’s Gift (Cooper) 2, 4 Quinopal (Trillo) 3. Also sf'tar'ed: 3 Carinthia, 1 Lancer, 7 Gallivanter car 9.1. 6 Good Gift, 8 Desert Glow. Captain’s Gift led by two lengths from Landmark and Lancer to the last fence, but once over this, Landmark finished strongly ami won by half a length from Capain’s Gift. Quinopal was a length and a-half away. Lancer was fourth. Time 3,42 4-5.

When the course proper was reached Charmaine had charge, and passing the stands the order was: Charmaine, Ephialtes, Martian Chief, Red Racer. Spearful. Mount Boa, Compris, Admiral Drake. Going along the back, Charmaine and Ephilate.Sf were in command with Red Racer. Martian Chief and Spearful next. Ephialtes led crossing the top. fallowed by Red Racer, Gay Crest, Mar tian Chief, Mount Boa and Royal Love. Gay Crest took charge at the false rail, with Admiral Drake. Compris and Spearful close up. In the run home Spearful beajt Admiral Drake by half a length, Gay Crest being a length and a-half away. Jaloux was fourth. Time 3.24 4-5. * Where Ephialtes took the lead was near the seven furlongs from Charmaine, Red Racer, Martian Chief, Spearful, Compris. Gay Crest moving up. Mount Boa, Admiral Drake, (Royal Love. Jaloux, Black Duke and Kahikatoa, with Latin Quaifter last. Ephialtes wa s still in charge at the top, with Red Racer, Gay Crest and Martian Chief next. Ephialtes led around the home turn from these jthree with Mount Boa and Royal Love next. When they straightened up for the run home, Gay Crest was in charge with Ephialtes, Martian Chief and Red Racer next. Gay Crest was challenged by Spearful and Admiral Drake. Spearful and Admiral Drake fought out an exciting finish, in which Spearful prevailed by half a length. Gay Crest was a length and a-half away third. Jaloux was fourth, followed by Comprig, Royal Love, Kahikatoa, Martian Chief, Latin Quarter, Ephialtes, Black Duke, Mount Boa. Red Racer, Charmainre, with Flower last.

Red Racer was firsjt into the straight, but was then done with. Gay Crest took command. His success was proclaimed, but Admiral Drake headed him at the distance. Spearful then put in his claim and, after an exciting struggle, gained the verdict by half a length. Gay Crest was a good third. Jaloux and Compri s headed the others. Mount Boa failed to stay. Spearful is owned by Messrs F. and N. Foreman, and is trained by M. Williams at Otaki. Spearful did not race at ftwo or three years. This was his thirty-fifth start and seventh win. He has been second in seven races, and third twice, and unplaced eighteen times. He won the Wairarapa County Cup at Car{terton a week ago. Spearful i s by Greyspear, an imported son of Spearmint, winner of the English Derby and the Grand Prix de Paris. Spearmint was the greatest English son of Carbine. Markful, the dam of Spearful, is by Hymetus. £494. Spearful is a six-year-old bay gelding by Greyspear from Markful, and like White Nose, winner of the Melbourne Cup, is a greajt grandson of Carbine, as Greyspear was a son of Spearmint. His dam Markful, by Hymettus from Temperance, by Birkenhead (son of Orme) from Temeraire, by Dreadnought. Prior to his Cup start, he had been fairly busy this season, having run e : ght time s for two wins, three seconds and a third. He began by finishing second to Martian Chief over seven furlongs, and third ;to Locksley and Landmark over a mile at Riecartou : u August. lie was unplaced in another seven-furlong race at the same meeting. A; the Otaki-Maori meeting last month. Spearful won over a mile and 55 yards, and was second over a mile. Then a/t Masterton he was beat, on by half a neck by Ephialtes, who was conceding 131 b, over a mile and a-quarter. Last Saturday, at Carterton, he won over the same distance wi‘h 7st 31b. Time 1.11. Three North Island horses filled the places. The Croupier-Kozan bracket was a hot favourite, carrying £1654 10s. Autopay carried £694 10s and Golden Wings £616 10s. The finish was a very exciting one, necks only separafting the first four horses. Cimabue, the winner, was only ninth favourite, carrying £269. H e is a member of ’the team of H. B. Lorrigan, the Trentham trainer, who is i n Melbourne with Concentrate and Oratorian. Golden Wings began very smartly and was soon clear in front of the rails from Croupier. At the course proper Golden Wing s and Croupier were clear from Red Heckle, Cimabue, Arrow Lad and Palmermo. This was the order of the leaders into the straight. One hundred yards from home Croupier, Golden Wings and Red Hackle vrerp practically on terms, fighting it out when Cimabue came with a rattle and reached the post a neck in front of Golden Wings. Croupier was only a neck away, and a similar margin in front of Red Heckle. Then came Cricket Bat, Arrow Lad, Autopay, Great Star, Gustavo and Lord Argosy. Riccarton Handicap.— 2 KING COLOSSUS (B. H. Meeting HANDICAP TO CIMBRIAN. (Aus. & N.Z. Cablp Assn.) MELBOURNE. November 8. The weather for the V.R.C. Races yesterday was sultry. Phar Lap was scratched for the Fisher Plate at 12.24 p.m. Dermid was fourth early in the race, but he beat the fast-finishing Stephen in the Batman Stakes. His rider. Cook, won this race last year on Homedale. Liberal led always in the Flemington Stakes. He was bred by his owner, Mr A. G. Hunter. The trainer is Foulsham, who had Mollison. Veilmond, who is trained by the New Zealander, George Price, led always in the Fisher Plate. His rider, Pike, won the event three times previously on Phar Lap, Gothic and Pantheon.

Cimbrian was the last at the home turn, but he finished brilliantly in the V.R.C. Handicap. This was the rider Pike’s second win during the afternoon, and his sixth for the meeting. Cimbrian is a half-brother to Heroic. Five of the nine starters failed to complete the course in the Victorian Steeples. S. Fullerton, the rider of the winner, won the Cup Hurdle Handicap on Taciturn. Glenanton finished brilliantly and won the final handicap in the last stride. The rider, Knox, won the Caulfield Cup on Dennis Boy, and the Cantala Stakes on Dermid. The stakes at the meeting totalled £27,542.
