William Herman Gladwin, charged with inciting persons to obstruct Inspector Rawlc in the execution of his duty, was fined £5. Gladwin was one of the participants in the trouble which occurred recently at the gates of the Parliamentary grounds. RUGBY, May 1. ' Britain will be represented at two forthcoming international motor-boat racing events. In t'hie Garda. regatta, opening on May 9, there will be two British entrants, Miss Betty Carstairs, in her boat-, Estelle IV, and Kaye Don, in Lord Wakefield’s Miss England II Besides racing in the- regatta, Don may attempt to beat his own record of 103.2 miles an hour. Miss England 11. will also appear at Potsdam regatta. SERIOUS FIRE AT WHAKATANE. WHAKATANE, May 2. A fire at Taneatua at 1.30 this morning destroyed four shops. The shops were those of the following:—G. C. Peebles, general storekepeer; E. M. Brycnton, butcher; McCall, saddler; and Mrs Sutherland, milliner. The , contents of McCall’s and Mrs Sutherland’s shops were removed safely. The buildings were valued at over two | thousand sterling. The value of the I contents of Peebles’ and Brycnton’s shops was estimated at £2OOO. Peebles’ stock was insured, but the amount is not available.
