HOKITIKA NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) The Trustees of the Riccarton Racecourse were to meet yesterday to decide the application of the Westland Racing Club to hold its benefit meeting on 30th Inst., but advice was received that consent was withheld until Ashburton’s objection is considered by the District Committee of the C.J.C. on Tuesday next. The delay is very tantalising as the time to the meeting is short enough. It is not clear exactly what is the objection as the Westland Club’s meeting falls a week after the Ashburton meeting, and could not affect the gathering in any way. 'Reports from time to time of large sized quinnat salmon being caught in and about the Waitaha River and beach include mention of one being caught last week weighing fifty pounds. It was caught on a schnapper line. Pre vously what was evidently a large fish got. away with the fishing lino. Several fair-sized fish of the same kind have been washed up on the beach also. During last week 34 men were employed by the County Council under No. 5 unemployment, scheme. The number for next week shows a.decided increase. There is also a good contingent at work within the borough. The Bishop of Christchurch (Dr. West Watson), returned from the Far South on Friday and at Hokitika admitted the Vicar, Rev. IT. J. W. Knights, to be Acting Rural Dean of the Provisional Deanery of Westland, comprising the parishes of Hokitika. Ross and Kumara. The Bishop returns to Christchurch to-morrow.
