REEFTON NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent). REEFTON, May 3. The rainfall for the month of April as recorded by the Reefton School of Mines was as follows:—Total fall, 4.74 inches; maximum fall 2.4 in on the .2nd; number of rainy days, seven. For April 1930, the total w r as 4.16 inches; max. fall, 1.16 in on the 28th; number of rainy days nine. The interest taken in the Reef ton Bowling Chib’s competitions considerably increased this season. There are two reasons for this. One is that the green is playing perfectly, it being in the very best conditions, thanks to the untiring work of the caretaker. Mr G. McKechnie, and the other is that the play of the new members has improved so much that even some fo the older, ones cannot concede them many points. Another game for the “Buttons” was played yesterday afternoon, and was witnessed by a large number of members and spectators. The contestants were Messrs V. Mori and D. Miner (holders) and Messrs J. B. Auld and G. N. Orsbourn (challengers). The latter were the first to score, but play was very even until about the 16th head where Mori, in driving, conceded his opponents six on one head. The ehal?ngers led by five with one head to go, and Mori with all the bowls in front erf the jack and laying two, drove his last bowl and carried two of his as well as the jack back, scoring four after a magnificent shot. His opponents thus won by one. Another game will take place this week-end, Messrs V. Magee and C. Curtis having chal.enged the winners. The Reefton Cricket Club’s annual ball held in the Criterion Theatre on Friday evening was a great success in every way. The attendance was large, there being visitors from all the West I Coast cricket clubs, and over 150 couples were present, while the gallery i was crowded with spectators. Steel’s Orchestra provided excellent music, and IMr W. Hunt made an admirable M.C. The floor was in excellent order, while I the supper was equal to the very vest ever set before a Reefton assemblage, and was liberally supplied. During the evening, Mr J. B. Auld presented the trophies won during the seasons to Mr W. Blom for the best batting and bowling averages, and to Messrs Bonifacio and P. Scott as the best fieldsmen. Dancing was then resumed and was continued well into the small hours of the morning.
