UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD

LABOUR VACANCY No Union Nominees (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 3. A circular has been issued to all of the unions proposing that there should be no nominations for the position of Workers’ Representative on the Unemployment Board, which has been rendered vacant through the retirement of Mr W. Bromley. The opinion in trade union circles is stated to be unanimous that no action will be taken from that quarter to fill the vacancy, on the ground that the Minister of I.abour has the right to make the final choice, and not the unions. The nominations close on May 21st. and already one or two unions have decided to take no part in the appointment of a member. The Unions affiliated to the Alliance of Labour and to the New Zealand Labour Party all condemn the Unemployment Act. It stated that Mr W. T. Young, a former Secretary of the Wellington Seamen’s Union, has been nominated, but that there is a proviso for his withdrawal, which will operate at the dictation of the Unions.
