I have to advise you that, as a result of the investigation which has been made into the present position of the revenues of the • ort owing to the very seriou • domination of <he coal trade on which the Department i- almost entire y dependent for its revenues, it is quite clear that the financial position is such at present that we cannot continue the expenditure on this w:»rk. You are a war? that the Westport Harbour is a separate account. The positio i has now been reached where the uhole of the revenues will be required f r ordinary port maintenance. and while this poiti’on obtains will not permit of the continuation of the breakwater extension. 1 regret very much, therefore, that it has been necessary to issue instructv n< to close dow H the whole of the work .‘is from the end of this month, with the exception that it will be necessary, before finally c osing the w< rk. to bring the exi‘ ting nortion of the breakwater extension to a sufficient state of completion to enable it to withstand heavy weather. I have further to advise you that the position will be. reviewed again in six months’ time.’’
