COAL OWNERS’ CONFERENCE

WAGE REDUCERS MEET A conference of West Coast coal owners was held in Christchurch on April 17th. The conference was private* but a statement made to the press by Mr W. A. Flavell on the following day revealed that wage-rediwtions comprised the main subject of discussion. Incidentally. Mr Flavell testified to the correctness of the minors demand that no more coal 'eases be granted by admitting that there w n re too many mines operating now. After admitting that the owners had made a hash of the industry. Mr Flavell expressed the opinion that trouble might be expected from the miners in the event of the 10 per cent wage cut being applied to them, but said that the miners must realise that the wage cut was inevitable. Tn other words, this representative of the coal owners, after confessing that the own ers have made a mess of the industry, demands that the minors shall lamelv consent to pay for the owuei- blunders.
