Monthly Meeting The monthly meeting of the Grej’ County Council was held on Friday. Present: Councillors W. Ogilvie (chairman), A. McDonneU, J. Ryall, J. Mulcarc, A. Donnellan, 11. G. Carter, A. McDonnell, G. Blair a~id J. W. Hanj nan. The County Engineer, Mr J- | Higgins, and the County Clerk Mr M. I' Keating were also in attendance. The Transport Department wrote forwarding copy of Motor Drivers.’ j.Regulations for 1931 and asked fo r reIturn of traffic licenses collected for the year ended March 31st. 1931. Rek ceived and information to be supplied. Mr H. W. de Castro, Audit Inspector wrote stating that as there had been only one transaction in the Workers’ Dwelling Loan Bank Account since 1927 and with the annual charge increased to £1 for keeping this account, the balance of £4ll/7/2, unless immediI ately required to be operated upon should be invested either in the Sinking Fund or placed on Fixed Deposit. I If the account was closed this month the half yearly charge to September 1931 would be avoided. The County Clerk said the Council raised a loan to build workers dwellings in 1927 and after four houses had been built there was a balance of £4ll/17/2. There was no cottage wanted anywhere at present. The Council I raised the loan of £llOO in 1927 and the interest and loan had to be paid half yearly at an interest of 6 per cent, j it was decided to approach the people • from whom the loan was. raised, with ; a view to paying the sum present in I hand in liquidation of the loan, instead I of having to pay it in instalments out | of the general account. I The Inglewood Borough Council ! wrote re contribution on cost of legal | action re rating: Borough v. The Crown and asking for the donation of £l/1/-. i It was decided to grant the donation. I Messrs S. and D. Armstrong and L. • Nyberg wrote asking for road access ito properties at Ngahere. The matter | was left in the hands of the Engineer. ’ The question of the extension of the Borough Cemetery was further held i over until the next meeting of th Couneil. | The District Engineers, Public Works Department Mr T. A. Johnston, wrote stating that the balance of authority, £47 in connection with Crooked River Bridge had been cancelled. The Post and Telegraph Department wrote with reference to removal of telegraph poles, and suggesting that for future removals, the Council enter into an agreement to. bear half the I costs. The Engineer said he did not think the request was an unreasonable one.—lt was agreed to. ! The Unemployment Board wrote • asking for a refund of £B/8/- in connection with the employment of men 1 under age.

■ The County Clerk said the men concerned were recommended by the DeI partment and it was not their fault. | They had now found out that these . meh were under age. These men were on a list supplied by the Department. ! They were paid £4/4/- previously. I Cr Robinson said he thought they ■ should refuse to pay the second time. [ Cr Carter said that if the Council ) had received advice from the Depart- | meat they should not be Hable for it. It was decided not to pay the I amount demanded. | Mr J. Hogan wrote asking permisi sion to construct a water race across | the Maori Gully Road.—Granted subi ject to the Engineer’s "approval. | The No 12 District Highways Coun- • c.il advised that it was unable to pay any subsidy towards the cost of traffic inspector’s expenses on the West ; Coast. I The County Clerk said a letter was ' received twelve months ago that they ■ were prepared to pay a proportion of i his salary and travelling expenses, but ■ had no.w decided not to keep it up. — Received The West Coast Farmers’ Union ap- ! plied for a reduction in rates for the I ensuing year, a remit to this effect having been passed at the last meeting o fthe Union.—Received. It was decided to reply stating that the Council would consider the matter in June.
