HOKITIKA NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, April 23. There is to be no contest here in Connection with the municipal elections. The Mayor, Mr G. A. Perry, has been re-elected unopposed, and also the ( Borough Council, except that Mr D. P., | Stuart replaces Mr J. L. Turner, who i did not stand for rje-elect|£>n. The [other members are: Dr. Techelmann, ! Messrs A. 0. Armstrong, T. W. Duffy, A. R. Elcock, D. J. Evans, E. Heenan, G. 'Heinz, and J. King. On the Harbour ■ Board Mr T. N. Warren replaces Dr. Teichelmann, the others elected being (Messrs E. W. Heenan and J. S. Mcjlntosh senr. On the Hospital Board, 'Mr E. W. Heenan replaces Mr J. L. | Turner, the other Borough representatives being Messrs J. J. Breeze, senr., ‘and T. W. Duff. Ross borough has a livelier public ’spirit at present than most other Westland municipalities, having no fewer I than fourteen candidates for the nine Council seats, and two candidates for I the Mayoralty. The nominees for 'Mayor are Mr John Murdoch and Mr Hermann Osmers, the present Mayor. ‘Fur the Council those standing are:— Messrs W. J. Blacklow, P. G. Bridgman. W. R. Cherrie, G. D. Davis, P. Douglas, A. Hedwig, J. Holmes, K. O. iMay, J. J. Rea. IL S. Richards, R. 'Scott, A. Thompson, J. Thomson, and E. Whittle. Ross has re-elected Mr W. G. Richards to the Hokitika Harbour Board.

At the annual meeting of St. Mary’s Mcu’s Debating Club there was a representative attendance of members present. The annual report and. balance sheet were favourably commented on. The election of officers resulted in

an almost new selection of members taking on the responsibilities of the Club. The Club will meet weekly on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. and it behoves all members to attend and make the season as successful as those in the past.

It was decided to hold the first meeting on Alay Ist, when a ping-pong tournament will be h'dd. In a discusson on the syllabus for the ensuing season a number of good suggestions were made to the Committee. At the local Unemployment Board discussion it was suggested to Air W, E. Leadley that an extra grant for prospecting by unemployed men should be sought. The Mayor said he had gathered from one of the local bankers that several small parcels of gold were being brought in now from the country, all fresh sources of supply. Air O’Bncn, AI.P., has advised the Westland County Council that he has interviewed the Afinister of Public Works relative to the authorisation of various works in the County, but the Alinister could only promise to do what was possible in view of the great shortage of money. Air O’Brien will, however, meet the Alinister again and press for the works that are urgent. Advice has been received that the Governor-General has approved the appointment of Air I). J. Evans as a member of the Hokitika High School Board, in tl e place of the late Air A. Clifton.

The. idea of a combined meeting emanated from the Ashburton Club, which had the racing date selected. Westland Club proposed to race the Saturday beifore or after the. 23rd. and Ashburton ‘Chib suggested a combination. Westland Club, at the suggestion of Ashburton. applied for the combined meeting, and it has now been granted. The local j lub also sent over a draff programme, (regarding which, and also the matter of officials.
