HOKITIKA NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, October 22. As in most other localities, the view . - of the solar eclipse hero this morning , was very limited. TJie phenomenon I’ was to be observed only for brief mo- , ments between the passing clouds. About 8.30 after heavy rain previously, the sun eamc into view, and it was . possible to observe the first touch of |. the moon’s shadow on its face, but clouds continued to pass thereafter, : and the spectacle as it grew was spoil- > cd. A sudden hail shower blotted out everything, and the only effect was the comparative lack of light, the hail whitening the ground. The latter stage of the eclipse was the better from an observation viewpoint. Mr Hodge, of the Pension Office-, Grevmouth. will be at the Public | Building, Sewell Street. to-morrow I forenoon, for the convenience of meet- f ing pensioners. All Saints Hall will be officially j opened on November 3rd with a. concert in connection with All Saints ; celebrations. ( There has been no whitebait caught during the last few clays, owing to ' the conditions being unfavourable-, | | there being heavy seas along the j coast. _ | The heavy hail storm this morning I about 9.30 o’clock, made the streets white for half an hour. Then the sun shone for a while, but at about 10.30 I there was anothen shower of sleet and . rain, with an accompanying bitterly i cold half gale. There was also another heavy fall of snow on the hills during the night. At a meeting of the local branch of « the Returned Soldiers’ Association on ■ Monday night, it was decided that all of the returned men who could do so , conveniently should assemble at the Cenotaph at Cass Cquare at 11 a.m. j on Tuesday, November 11th, and. fall- i • ing in, observe the two minutes’ 1 I silence as a mark of respect to fallen I ! comrades. Arrangements will also be ; made to sound “The Last Post.” | Owing to adverse weather condi- I tions to-day, the Ladies’ Golf Club j postponed for a week their putting j and approaching competition.
