CHRISTCHURCH COUNCIL Dr Thacker Deputy-Mayor. CHRISTCHURCH. May 13. The new City Council held its first nice ing to-night, with a crowded gallery. The strength of parties on the new Council is: Citizens’ Association 8. Labour 7. Independent (Dr Thacker) 1; Labou r Mayor, Rev Mr Archer. Dr 'Thacker was elected Deputy Mayor, w.th nine votes, against Mr Andrews, of the Citizens’ Association, who secured eight vo es. Thereafter, in the setting up of the Committees, Dr Thacker voted with the Labour Party in every division. Labour took the Chairman hip of every Committee, and its members can control every Commit ee. Towards the end of the election of the Committees, when all the important Chairman had been chosen, one or two offers of Chairmanships on the minor Committees were made to the Citizens’ Party, but they refused to a cept them.
