HOKITIKA NOTES.

(From Our Corrasnondent.) HOKITIKA, April 26. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day, the owners of half a dozen wandering animals were fined, as also were four persons convicted of traffic breaches, such as speeding and neglect to have lights, while two fines were imposed oil the possessors of unregistered firearms. Nine persons were convicted of licensing law infringements, and a couple of small debt cases were adjudicated. An application by J. Haines for a rehearing of a case as between applicant and W. Freitas, was made. Mr McCarthy, for applicant. Mr Murdoch did not object. The application was granted, the rehearing to be taken a month hence. At the Warden’s Court, successful applications were those of J. McGregor and M. Nolan, in connection with Ross town leases, that of the Westland Board being adjourned. Other applications were:—G. A. Stewart (Mr Murdoch) for license for a dam —Withdrawn. Henry Jones (Mr Sellers) for water race—Adjourned. Bay of Plenty Coy (M r Elcock) for water race—Adjourned.

Hon F. Atmore, who arrives on the Coast on May 2nd, will on May 4th go to ( South Westland, ; Visiting the schools. On May 6th he visits the local and Kumara schools, returning to Greymouth for lunch, thence going to Reefton, and visiting schools on the way, if time permits. Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., will be pleased to receive communications from those wishing to interview the Minister while in Westland. Mr Wm. Z has disposed of his butchery business in Revell Street to Messrs Taylor and Cumming. Mr J. Sullivan, of Sullivan Bros, proprietors of the Fox Glacier Hostel, was a visitor here this week.

Many are looking forward to the opening of the shooting season next Wednesday. Kanieri householders' elected as a School Committee Messrs F. W. Selby (Chairman), IT. R. Elcock. E. Howat, G. Mclntosh and T. R. Ches erman. Contractors for the Station Road at Koiterangi to link the Municipal and Whitcombe roads, are completing the la , -t 20 chains of their contract, and when that is finished in about a month’s time, there will remain only 67 chains to complete the road through. About seven hundred residents took part yesterday in the local services in commemoration of Anzac Bay. Af the Princess Thea re the Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) and Rev J. F. Hayward gave addresses, and several hymns were sung. There were about forty exorvteemen present, under Lieut Black, a firing party of Territorials under Sergt J. Renton, a numerous company of Cadets under Lieut Hutchison, the Boy Scouts under Scoutmaster Sutherland, and Girl Guides under their Commandant, Mrs Perry. The Maori Melody Party assisted in the singing, while the Municipal Band led the procession which later visited the South African war memorial, the State School memorial, and the Cenotaph on Cass Square. At each memorial the military saluted and fired volleys, and the Last Post was sounded. Many beautiful wreaths were laid on the memorials by relatives and friends. The Band headed the march back to the Brill Hall, playing the march “Colonel Bo gey,” the parts of which were presented to the Band by Lieut Bleach.

In a hockey match at Cass Square the local ladies’ team beat that of the Star Club of Greymouth by 12 to nil. The E.'.celsior Football Club is send ing the following team to Greymouth o-morrow to play Blakctown: J. King, R. King, Houston, Stevenson. Nightingale, O’Brien, Davidson, A. King, Ryan, Amuri King. Bannister, Freitas, Dougherty. Hughes and Kelly. The Kiwi seniors play Stars at Hokitika, and the Kiwi juniors play Rimu. Kokatahi and Ross play a junior game at Ross*, and Excelsior juniors meet Arahura at Arahura.

On Wednesday evening, Dr Buchanan, Medical Superintendent at the Hokitika Mental Hospital, was farewell«.d by the Mayor and citizens at a representative gathering at the Club Rooms, Hamilton Street. The Mayor (M r G. A. Perry) paid a high tribute to the departing guest, his remarks beings endorsed by Brs Baird and Teichelman, Hon H. L. Michel, M.L.C., and Mr 11. M. Coulson (official visitors to the institution), and Mr B. J. Evans (Bistrict Coroner). Br Buchanan feelingly replied, stating he came to the institution when it was in a transition stage, and he had to carry out the work with zeal, but it was a time following the war period, -when money I was more plentiful, and the necessary I work was done. He felt he had done something .useful in seeing that the roadway connecting the two hospital institutions had been put through. He commended his successor, Br Hayes, t 0 the good graces of the people, and felt that if they gave Br Hayes, the support he had received, the institution would continue to function favourably. On behalf of Mrs Buchanan and himself. he thanked them heartily. The Mayor extended to Br Hayes a hearty welcome, and hoped his stay would be as pleasant and as useful as that of Dr Buchanan. Br Hayes said he would find it difficult in following Br Buchanan, whose ability was recognised by the Department. He would be encouraged by their welcome, and it would be his endeavour to do his best.

The U.S.A, members yesterday, after the parade, marched to the cemetery, where about 40 poppy wreaths were laid on the graves of fallen men, nurses and war workers. Messrs Newman kindly placed cars at the disposal of the visiting party, and the men. with the civic authorities, clergy and others, were entertained at afternoon tea at the Soldiers Hall, Mrs R. J. j Appleton being hostess-. The President (Mr Evans) asked Mr R. Pater-j son (hon secretary) to read the annual! report and balance sheet. The balance sheet*showed the year commenced with a credit balance of £5 16s, and closed with a credit, of £lO3 2s 9d. I'he gToss receipts were £199. The War Graves
