WESTPORT NOTES.
(From Our Correspondent.) WESTPORT, April 24. A meeting of th|j State School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. Mr G. Gothard presided. There were present, Messrs Andi l*son. Jope, Brunning, Parfitt, Shanks, Mrs Miflier, Mrs Caldwell, and Mr Howarth (Headmaster), Mr Howarth, thanked the committee for assistance in the past, this being the final ml leting. He explained that the reduced attendance might bring about the loss of another teacher. He had telegraphed tbf* Education Board to secure a teacher to
relievo Miss Hill anj one had been appointed. Mrs Mill'ter mentioned that there were four patients in the hospital from the school. The Dental Clinic report was read A donation of 2/- froni( Mrs Lennon was received. Both operators appeared to be fully employed. Accounts for requisites in building were referred to the Board’s architect. The Secretary submitted a balanc,e-shi?fet for the year, showing a credit balance. Mr Howarth presented. copy of a written request for use ,cf Victoria Square for a practice ground for the children, and also the Council’s decision to tjfuse permission. A discussion ensued, and it was resolved to again approach the Borough Council pointing out that all that was required was practice for the first and second teams of footballers. Mr Parfitt, reporting on behalf of the Visiting Committee, stated that in making enquiries about the idea of “carriers,” the head infant school-teacher had stated that diphtheria ( had. ncqftir* red practically annually. It should be impressed upon the Education Board that the room was totally unfitted for the infants’ department. It was agreed that the master be brought before the Education Board on Wednesday. It was agreed to close the school early and that it be given a thorough disinfecting. Arrange ments were then made as to- the var! ous matters which were to be brought before the Education Board. In adopt ing the halance-she t of school accounts (presented by Mr Howarth), it was pointed out that Mr Howarth’s services in that r* tepee,t were voluntary, Qjjd that the statement which had appeared in the local press to the effect that the committee had requested Mr Howarth to furnish a balancesheet was not cornlct. Mr Gothalrd (Chairman) expressed the opinion that aJI had been done which was possible for the benefit of the school. Votes of thanks wetfil accorded the Chairman, Mr Howarth, and also the staff.
