HOKITIKA NOTES.

(From Our Curresuondent.) HOKITIKA April 16. At the Harbour Board meeting yesterday it was mentioned that the auxiliary fchppnei Aratapu, which has teen trading to Karamea, will be making a couple of trips to Hokitika for timber, and the vessel may enter the local trade regularly if the conditions are favourable. A start has been made on Gibson Quay with the detection of the new brewery. Marked enthusiasm prevailed 'last evening at the annual meeting of St. Mary’s Literary and Debating Club, r.r.d the coming season promises to be most successful. The election of officers resulted in a strong committee being set up for the ensuing year. The Club meets weekly on Monday evenings and as time goes on an increased membership ic expected. At Christchurch on Friday last, Mr Justice Adams admitted Mr Hugh L. Park, of Hokitika as a barrister of the Supreme Court. Last evening nominations closed for the Hokitika School Committee. There r.ro thirteen nominations for the nine seats, so an election will take place at the annual meeting to be held on Monday next. Those nominated tre: —Mrs Garnet Perry, Mrs J. H. Wilson, Messrs J. P. Coulson, B. J. Fodder, W. H. Shannon, IL W. Sweney, A. C. Armstrong, W. E. Richards, J. Conning (sitting members), and Messrs A. Leslie, F. W. Chesterman, J. J. Breeze junr., and A. McDougall. The making of a new track to the Fox Glacier and the erection of a suspension bridge there is now to be undertaken by the Department of Public Works, authority having been received by the District Engineer. There is a track from the Hostel for a couple of miles along the north bank of the Fox River. At Easter time a flood errried away the remainder of this track leading to the terminal face of the glacier. The new track will cross the Fox river by a. suspension bridge near the hut, and will run round Cone Rock to the south. When, completed it -will lead on to the clear ice. It will thus do eway with the necessity of clambering over the moraine, and at the same time it reaches a point from which a gorgeous view is obtainable of the upper part of the glacier. Writing to the local paper in reference to the fire outbreak at the old Crown Brewery, Constable Best, who took action in checking the fire, siates:— “In view of the present ardent topic in Fire Brigade circles—motor v. nightwatchman, and in fairness to Mr Ridiand (the Nightwatchman), I ask space to supplement your report of the fii’e in Davies’s Brewery, in order to transfer any. “honours’’ as to the discovery of the fire to our capable watchman. When I first noticed the fire from the railway line' :i, Gibson Quay, I cycled to the exchange and rung the tower. At a meeting of the Rugby sub-Union. there were present: Messrs J. J. Breese, McManaway, J. Cooper, D, Williamon R. McDonald, J. Stafford, A. Cut■jiish, F. McGregor, D. Dowell, J. Coulson, J. Howat; and E. Heenan. Kokah:hi Club tvrote cancelling its entry cf a senior team, and nominating a junior one. The Kanieri Club advised that it had disbanded, and withdrew its nominations. A disqualification imposed on C. Pfahlert last year was at nis application removed. A similar application from J. Griffiths was deferred until the W. C. Union had replied to an inquiry. Reclassifications were agreed to as follows:- Senior to junior: L. Hughes, A. McDonald, RPalmer, L. George. It was resolved io defer an application from J. Davidson pending enquiries. The offer of Mr A. Sumner to prepare the ground for £l/17/6 was accepted. Mr Stafford moved that a district scheme be formulated in Westland Sub-Union distncf. —This was seconded by Mr MeManaway. After considerable discussion the motion was lost. Mr Stafford moved that a Fixture Committee be appointed, and that Messrs D. William son, D. Dowell and the Secretary be the committee. This was seconded ny Mr Howat and carried. The Hokitika Harbour Board at -» o’clock yesterday afternoon held its monthly meting. Present: Messrs G. A. Woods (Chairman), M. Houston, W. Zeigler, E. Heenan, and W. E. Richards. The Secretary reported on the receipt' of tenders for South Wall repairs, the lowest being that of P. Johnstone, which provisionally accepted at £12.4, subject to some suggested alterations. It was reported that there had been some further damage to the wall. It was decided in view of the alterations in the position to write to the Marino Department asking that) the Resident Engineer again visit and report, subject to the Board bearing out the statements made. It was stated that the present position of the wrecked Zingara was causing a scour against the South Wall. The offer of J. Johnstone for reconditioning bolts and stays was also deferred. It was resolved to notify the owners of the Zingara that the vessel was causing a scour which was endangering the wall and there was also a further danger of swinging on to the wall. Two weeks was allowed for | the removal of E-he vessel. In connedItion with the rubbish dump usdd by ‘.he Borough causing an offensive nuis--1 ance it was resolved to close t’w dump 1- and that a fresh dump be arranged alongside the signal station. Accounts ( amounting to £358/3/11 were passed ! for payment, including £292/10/- repayment of loan. The Marino Department wrote in reference to 1 lamp lenses. It was stated, that four lamjjs from the Zingara were under Offer. Left to the Chairmap to ; deal with.

The Marine Department approved of plans for repair of South Wall. The Harbour 'Master reported there was a good bar, running straight to sea, with an average depthj during the last month of 12 feet.—
