The Violet Ward Prize, Christchurch Centre: Marorie E. Alexander, Ad vanned Grad e Pianoforte. Miss Mary Martin, pupil of the Greymouth Convent has been advised by the Associated Board of the Royal Academy of Music ami the Royal Col lege of Music, London, that an Ex bition in Violin, tenable at the Royal College of Musie, London, has been awarded to her. This is the first time that an Exhibition, tenable at the Royal College itself, has been of fared to any pupil in this district Miss Martin in the practical examination hl'ld in November 1928, obtain ed Advanced Grade Hoooure. Though the results of these examinations are published as soon as they are conclud Ad, it is not until some months af terwards, however, that the list of medallists and exhibitioners is known. (Nominally /such awards are tenable for two years, but it is not unusual for them to Extend to three years or even. a longer term. They are made by the Board on the recommendation of the. examiners to candi dates showing except.oral musical promise, and they entitle their holders to free musical tuition ar *ho Royal Academy, London, for not less han two years. If exhibitioners ac eept the award, they pay their own travelling and living expenses, but the College itself covers all fees and disbursements. If Miss Martin aecepie th e exh'bition, she is due in England in January 1930. Next month the exhibitioner will be tendered a congratulatory concert by the Convenr pupils, on her unique success, when her parents, Mr and Mrs J. Martin. Cf Palmerston North, are expected to be present. Sin.ee the advice as to the award above, mentioned, word of further successes on the part of Miss Martin has been received by her tutors. These include the award of a New Zealand Exhibition, of a value of £l5, by the Associated Board of the Royal Academy of Music/ and the Boyal College of Music, London, this being one of the two local exhibitions awarded for th' Dominion the other of which Is valued at £lO. Miss Martin in addition proves to be also the winner of the silver medal awarded to New Zealand for the Alvanced Grade m the lixamilnations held in November, 1928. The record of the Greymouth Convent pupils since the first examination held here Ly the Associated Board, is an exceptional one, including, als P does, four gold medals, two silver medals, one £l5 local exhibition for piano playing, and another £l5 local exhibition for violin playing, as 'well as the exhibtion for violin playing tenable at th?'
