WESTPORT NOTES.

(From Our Correspondent.) WESTPORT, February 9. There is a fair amount of talk just now about the cash on delivery method of importing from Great Britain, and apparently many concluded from Sir Joseph Ward’s refnarks on the subject that the Government- will cancel the Post Office C.O.D. service. One of the exporting firms in England has recently issued circulars to the effect that it is quit© aware of the efforts being made in that direction, and even if successful, so far as the Post Office is concerned, the firm has made complete arrangements for the forwarding of parcels to be paid for 1 on delivery, and customers may send their orders along as' usual. A while back an effort was made to establish importing houses to carry on this sort of business, apart from the Post Ofhce x but it failed to catch on. The firm referred to, however, assures the general public that it is not employing agents, nor running any branch houses.

Ono of the . oldest buildings in Henley Street, at one time owned by Mr F. Morgan’s grandparents, is now being removed to Gladstone Street, where it will still be of service as a workshop. Mr James McKendry, Of the Municipal staffs met with a painful accident on Thursday afternoon. While carrying tools on his shoulder he dropped one, and on stooping to pick it up, a slasher slipped also, and inflicted a severe gash in his arm, necessitating surgical treatment. Mr McKendry is unable to work at present, but hopes to resume shortly. The Millerton Mine has been idle this last two days owing to lack of order.'. . _ The vital statistics for the month of January, 1929,. are- as follows: Births 4. deaths 14, Marriages 7. Miss A.
