Ward, went off the road on Friday' night at the hill on the Hokitika side of Kanieri. and was somewhat damaged, but nobody was hurt. A Junior National Scholarship* award for Hokitika is that of E. E. Richards, with 528 marks. The County Chairman, Mr E. A. Wells, has been visiting Okarito district, where road repairs are in prqgress, as inkling machinery is to bfe conveyed to the locality. Perry’s Circus attracted a profitable “house” here on Friday. The run in the river on Friday is expected t 0 have a good effect on the local bar.

At the Borough Council meeting on-' Friday, the question again came up of whether Cass Square should be made available for circus shows, when Cr D. J. Evans moved: That Cass Square be closed to all circus or similar dis-' plays where animals are involved., and the Overseer report, on the cost of conditioning part of Whitcombc or other suitable reserve for (a) parking place for touring motorists when camping; (b) site for circus or like entertainment. Cr Duff seconded the motion, to which Cr Elcock moved an amendment that every application for a cir-. cus be referred to the Council, and bd dealt with on its merits. Cr Jeffries ' in seconding this, said this question had been previously the subject of a bye-election, and the public had voted that Cass Square should be used for circuses if the circumstances warranted. They could get £2O to £25 by letting, and it was wrong not to accept it. Mr Heenan said a circus would make a moss of the Square, whiji should only be allowed to be used if the other places wore not available. Mr Evans said he was glad to hear Mr Heenan state there was a changi of attitude among the public as to cir cases using th e Square. The marks of the last visit were visible to the present day. He was quite satisfied to ‘ake the decision of the ratepayers at next election. The amendment by Mi. Elcock. t 0 refer all applications foi the use of Cass Square to the Council for decision was carried.

Jeffries, and Dr. Teichelmann, not to exercise its option, which matures on August 21st j next, of taking over from the Kanieri Power Coy its undertakings and, obligations at valuation. The Sub-Commit-tee interviewed the company’s manager, Mr Cranston, regarding the fluctuation of the electric light, and were informed that every effort was being made by the company to improve the lighting, and a new icgulator had been installed, which it was hoped would improve the ligh ir.g. The company were very anxious to give the best service, but /whilst the dredge was working off the same power line, it was very difficult to maintain an even standard of light. Mr Cranston intimated that the matter of additional power was now under consideration by his principals, with every possibility of the proposals for additional power be\ ing approved. The Council decided that the matter of fluctuation and cost pe r unit can safely be left in the hands of the company.
