WESTPORT NOTES.

(From Our Ow» Correspondent ) WESTPORT, December 16. There passed away at 2.30 a.m. on Tuesday a very old and respected resident, in the person o f Mrs Tregurtha scnr. Deceased was the relict of the late Air Tregurtha, at one time senior Lighthouse. Keeper at Cape Foulwind,, who later entered into business in Westport, establishing the hardware firm of Tregurtha and Coy, Palmerston Street. Mr Tregurtha predeceased his wife about ten years ago. The late Mrs Tregurtha was born in Cornwall England, and came out to New Zealand 56 years ago. She had spent over 30 years in the Buller district, and was a prominent member of tlie Westport Methodist Church. Deceased leaves a family of three daughters: Mrs Jamieson. Paeroa; Mrs H. Salter and Miss Hilda Tregurtha, Westport; and seven sons: Messrs Fred (Wellington). Harold (Pahiatua), Edmund and Sydney (Petone), and William, Percy and Herbert (Westport). There are 41 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

The death occurred at Auckland of Mrs J. Peters, widow o f th e late Jack Peters, for many years foreman of the railways at Westport. The late Mrs Peters had many friends in Westport

Mrs B. Wcekes junr arrived by the Komata for the Christmas holidays, and is staying with relatives in Roniilly Street.

The Labour Party is to the fore again this year with a dane c and card party on Boxing Night. Members of the Ladies’ Committee are to be complimented upon the energy they have displayed. They have been working hard to provide enjoyment for others, and no doubt their efforts will be crowned with success.

The Komata arrived in Westport at 7 p.m. on Friday night, doing the trip in 234 hours from port to port. She was a full ship. Last month’s output of coal for Bulle r was as follows: —Westport Coal

During the month 44 steamers and 6 auxiliary sailers, representing 37.797 tons, entered the port, and 41 steamers and 6 auxiliary sailers, representing 32.448 tons, left the port. The total tonnage for the month was 70,245 tons.

Mean high water: Rive r 24 ft 6 ins bar 24 ft 10 ins; rainfall, 4.97 ins, 17 days’ rain.

Westport’s new lire engine was placed in the Station yesterday. It consists of a Morris chassis, -with the body built by Mr W. Bogers for Mr Len Powiek, contractor. The engine was loaded up at the Station with all its equipment last evening, with 2000 feet of hose, hydrants, branches and first-aid equipments. It carries 15 men.
