Nfew Zealand foresters may have more than a passing interest in the following by Mr Donald MacDonald the Australian Nature writer (.’■ays an exchange). “Reading a good deal at night., and practically in the open, many night flying insects of different kinds arc attracted by my lamp. Latterly. I have noticed very numerous among them, one of the worst of th*' ‘timber-getters’ in the Phorocantha beetles. These are beetles long in proportion to their width, and con spicuously long-pointed horns, and in collour a chestnut r/cd, with paler markings on the wing covers, one of which resembles a form of the letter X in Roman type. These beetles do a tremendous amount of damage with eucalyptus, and are often found in firewood. One of them got a footing in South Africa some time ago, and may be found wherever the bluegum is growing.” <
