WON BY STREPHON. Prince Humphrey Hurt. (Received November 4 at 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, November 4. The weather was dull and threatening for the V.R.C. races. There was a large crowd, including the GovernorGeneral . and the State Governors. There also were several New Zealanders present. In the Maiden Plate, Gilt Edge was fifth early in the race, hut took the lead at theydistance, and won nicely. It was its first placing. It cost 5000 guineas as a yearling. The owner is Mr A. J. Craig, who once won the Melbourne Cup with Bitalli. Parkwood was prominent throughout and recorded its third win in as many starts in the Maribyrnong Plate. The rider was Duncan, who also piloted Gilt Edge. The winner is engaged in the Derbies. Gothic had a brilliant win in the Melbourne Stakes, and has now recorded three wins, one second and one third in five starts this season. It is trained by the former New Zealander, Lou Robertson. Statesman came up at the last turn, and finished fast, getting third place.

Strephon had a decisive victory in the Derby. His trainer is Robertson, the owner Mr Green, and the rider was Pike. They also were associated with Gothic’s victory. The fractional times were:— First four furlongs, 544 secs; last four, 484 secs; concluding six, 1.13; final mile 1.384. CANTALA STAKES. Highland 9.8 .. 1 Karama 7.10 2 Black Duchess 8.6 3 Eleven started. Won by one and three-quarter lengths; third one and a-quarter lengths away. Time 1.374. Lady Beth was fourth. The fractional times were: First four fu"longs, 494 secs; last four, 48secs; concluding six 1.12. HOTIIAM HANDICAP. Epilogue 8.4 1 Valamita 8.10 2 Canning Queen 7.5 3 Fifteen started. Won by three-quar-ters of a length; one and a-half lengths; Mondiago fourth. Time 2.31}. This is a race record. Epilogue was second throughout, and led at the distance, to win brilliantly. The trainer, Scobie, also prepared Gilt Edge. Epilogue was ridden by R. Lewis, and is engaged in the Cup. The last half mile took 474 secs. In the Melbourne Stages, the last six furlongs took 1.12, and the last mile 1.404. Sabasson has been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. TURNSTILE FRAUDS. (Received November 4 at 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, November 4. Five men, including club employees, were arrested at Moorefield racecourse, on charges of conspiring to defraud the Moorefield Club, by manipulating the turnstile and reselling the admission tickets. BRISBANE DERBY. BRISBANE, October 4. The Derby resulted:—Paddi Ev', 8.5, 1; Royal Flavour, 8.5, 2; Guncraft, 8.10, 3. Nine stiarted. Won by three lengths. ’ Time 2.33.
