November in the eyes of most New Zealapders, signifies the greatest racing month of the year; for is it not then that the N.Z. Cup and the N.Z. Trotting Cup eventuate. The question of alleged damnge to bird ami forest life by opossums was referred to by Mr J. R. Wilson at last nit eting of the Otago Acclimatisation Society. Mr Wilson said he wished briefly to reply to a lengthy letter that appeared in the “Otago Daily >igne<l by Mr G. Simpson, jun.. conreining imported animals and national assets. In pointing out that the opos--um was a valuable animal to -the society and to the country. Mr Wilson said that i* had been proved that the animals caused no harm to forest life, and the statements made that bird life was harmed were far-fetched. Opposums <iid not interfere with the ‘birds or their eggs. „ Prominent scientific men had given proof time and agaiu of the harmless nature of opossums, and there was no direct evidence that the animals had ever been responsible for destroying bird life. Mr Wilson quoted extracts from reports compiled by wellknown experts, all of which' weftit to prove that the opossum was a harmless animal as far as forest and bird life were concerned. When the society was backed up by such opinions, there was no reason why an attempt tdiould l>e made by any other society or individuals to destroy an industry which brought in a big revenue.
