REEFTON NOTES

REEFTON, March 28. Mrs F. Keating left by yesterday’s express for Wellington. Mr A. Fuller, of Big River, is visiting Reefton. Mr C. Skinner, who has been on an extended visit to Wellington., returned to Reef ton 1 by last evening’s express. Mr H. Livick, of Nelson, who has been down the Coast, is at present in Reefton, and leaves for Nelson to-mor-row. Mr T. Cameron, the* well known racehorse trainer, passed through Reefton to-day, en route to Greymouth. PROGRESS LEAGUE. The monthly meeting of the Reef ton Progress League was held in the Council Chamber on Monday, when there were present Messrs I. Patterson (Chairman), W. Duff, Jas. Patterson, Morgan, Ward, Phillips, Morris and Mori (Secretary). On the motion of Mr Morgan, seconded by Mr Duff, it was resolved that the Secretary of the Buller Progress League be notified that this League approves of the dates fixed for the annual Conference of South Island Progress Leagues; that four delegates will attend from Reef ton; and that the following remits be sent forward urging: (1) The construction of a main highway between the East and West Coast via Glen Wye, Lewis Saddle and Maruia; (2) The more speedy prosecution of the Inangahua-Westport Railway, especially by the construction of the Buller Bridge railway formation to the Inangahua Junction; (3) That the Government be asked to adopt a more progressive mining policy by systematic prospecting for gold and other minerals, by the continuous employment of prospecting parties under the supervision of a competent geologist, and also by subsidising the production of gold, so as to make the value per ton of ore treated at least 30s.

It was proposed by Mr I. Patterson, seconded by Mr Ward, and carried, that the Minister of Public Works be asked to commence construction work on the Inangahua end of the Inangahua-West-port Railway, as there is a considerable number of unemployed in this district, and that Mr Hudson, M.P., be also asked to assist in this matter. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Jas. Patterson and Mr Duff, that the Reef ton Domain Board be asked to take the necessary steps to make a portion of the Strand Reserve available as a camping ground for travelling motorists.

It was resolved that the County Council be asked to have public conveniences erected adjacent to the Strand. It was proposed by Mr Phillips, seconded by Mr Patterson, and carried, that the County Council be asked to have a lamp placed at the Bank of New Zealand corner. On the motion of Mr Duff, seconded by Mr Morgan, it was decided that Mr Phillips interview Mr Brett as to obtaining a plan showing the gap to be constructed in the road from the East to the West Coast via the Lewis Saddle.
