WESTPORT NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, March 27. One of our advertisers on this page will shortly have to make an alteration. His advertisement will probably run as follows:—“J. McManus, long and favourably known at the Crown Hotel, Burnett ’s Face, will be pleased to receive his old friends and make new ones at the Union Hotel, Greymouth.” The new Administrator for Samoa appears to have been a distinguished militarist, judging by the accounts published, having held the title of Lieuten-ant-Colonel, and also being a C.M.G.O. We would wish that the military spirit had died out with General Richardson, and that peaceful persuasion would be the tactics employed in the future for the Samoans.

Although the rain held off until about 5 p.m. yesterday, there was always the threat of it, and this certainly had a detrimental effec‘ upon the attendance at Patterson Park. However, nothing was lacking upon the part of the Jockey Club, whose energetic Secretary left nothing undone for the comfort of patrons. A word of praise must, be given for the conduct of the tea room, where the ladies dispensed the cup that cheers. The Greymouth horses showed up well at the meeting. Messrs Jim. Collogan and Bruhn were visitors from Greymouth for the race meeting, and despite the showery weather, set out on their return on Alonday evening, Miss Bruhn proving a very capable chauffeur. A big party from the Westport Tramping Club paid a trip to Brighton on Sunday. The caves were not visited, the party making a trip up Fox’s River instead. The weather was beautifully fine and the tramp up the river was most enjoyable. Novelty was added to the trip in the way of a slip on Costello’s Hill. Fourteen willing helpers cleared the road in about half an hour when the two cars were' able to pass. Just as the work had been completed, a car full of Public Works officials arrived, but their services were not thou required. Mr Simon Crase, proprietor of the Gilmer Hotel, Grey mouth, and Airs Crase visited Westport for the races. Mr Crase formerly resided at Mokihinui and represented that riding on Buller County Council. Last month there was a. theft of jewellery from the house of Airs Pascoe here. Yesterday a man was arrested by Constable Matches and Detective Murch in connection with the theft.

The Buller Valley Dairy Company anticipate having to close down on East r Monday, on account of the .Sergeant’s Hill suppliers holding their cream back for a bowling club social. Air J. Peters, wharfinger for the Anchor Company, has returned from a holiday in the North Island. Air Thurlow, while assisting to line up a. troublesome horse at the barrier, at Monday’s races, was knocked over and sustained some injuries, but not serious ones. The Charleston Sports Committee have arrangements well forward for Easter Monday, and since first class nominations, have been received the meeting should attract a gbod crowd. Air Patterson, formerly Chief-Engin-eer for Wellington, is spending a few days at Westport. Mr R. Crawford, of the Vacuum Oil Company, arrived on Sunday with Mrs Crawford, ou his customary business visit. Aliss Adelino Ward has accepted a position as a relieving teacher in the Westport Station School and commences her duties next week.
