HOKITIKA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, January 16. This year promises to set up a new record for the South Westland tourist traffic. Quite a number of the visitors are using their own cars. Kanieri Lake yesterday attracted a large number, there being over a couple of score of motors there in the course of the day.

Several sawmills are in difficulty owing to a lack of water, and operations in one or two cases are being suspended. A large number of people avail themselves of the chance of bathing on tho local sea beach, tho conditions being ideal, with its calm sea and smooth beach. The only thing to disturb them is the supposed presence of sharks, a few of which are stated to have been caught north of that locality lately. At the local Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Messrs Parry and Benjamin, J’s.P., a prohibited person found drunk on Saturday evening was convicted and fined ss. A further charge of obtaining liquor while prohibited was adjourned to the 19th inst for the Magistrate to deal with. A resident of Rimu was charged today with attempted suicide by drinking a liniment. This case was also adjourned till Thursday to enable the •Magistrate to deal with it, the defendant being admitted to bail of £lO. The last two days are said to have been the hottest of the summer so far. Rain still threatens in the mornings, hut does not come, and about 10 and 11 o’clock the heat is not pleasant, but, rather, scorching. Great interest is being manifested in the Summer Flower Show to be held in the Soldiers Hall by St Mary’s Club. There are numerous special prizes, and these should encourage good competition. Schedules and entry forms a v c now available, and can be obtained on application to Turner’s Fruit Mart from to-night. Last week’s record of sunshine was 54 hours 2 minutes, but while no rain fell, there was no sunshine recorded on one day, and less than an hour of it on another day. The local Acclimatisation Society has ascertained that during the past white, bait season more than thirty tons of fish were sent overland by railway from Westland County, representing some 2373 packages. Fom Greymouth and flag stations 2G7 packages were railed, representing over eight tons of fresh fish, though no doubt some of the fish went from the Teremakau River, and half should be credited to Westland. The total fish railed was upwards of forty tons, being in actual weight 38 tons 15 cwt,, and in all 3340 packages of fish. In addition, there were the fish supplied for the local canning, and that used in local consumption, which would more than double the quantity given above.
