REEFTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, January 15. Mr A. Cox, the well kuowu veteran trotting trainer, was a visitor to Reefton for the race meeting, as the guest of Mr V. W. Alborn, and was shown over the Reefton racing track, which he expressed great pleasure in seeing, and stated that it was the best training track in New Zealand, having a softening tendency on the surface, and it would not break a horse down. Mr Bostock, of Christchurch, was on a business visit to Reef ton yesterday. Mr H. Livick, of Nelson, is in Reefton on his usual business visit. Mr and Mrs H. Cook and family, and Mrs O. Griffiths and family, who have been on a holiday visit to Wellington and the North Island, returned by last evening’s express. The funeral of the late Mr John S. B. Durward took place on Saturday afternoon, being very largely attended by miners, friends of the deceased, and members of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association. The service at the Suburban Cemetery was conducted by the Rev J. W. Bloyce.

A general meeting of the Reefton Motor Cycle Sports Club was held in the Secretary’s Office on Friday at 8.30 p.m. The statement of accounts for the sports meeting showed a very small loss. The payment of prize money was left in the hands of the Secretary. Mr A. B. West occupied the chair, and there were also present Messrs Geo. Pascoe (Secretary), J. Patterson, I. Patterson, N. Lawn, Jas. Noble, C. Tattley and J. A. Mcluroc. A vote of thanks was accorded to the Secretary for his yeoman services. Messrs J. Crooks, W. A. Clarke, W. Cowan, and A. Parkinson were also accorded a hearty vote of thanks for their services in conducting the motor sports, and the Inangahua Silver Band was thanked heartily for its attendance at the sports, in playing selections.

At a -meeting of the Inangahua A. and I’. Association, Mr A. B. West stated he wished to resign from the office of the President of the Association, as he considered that a farmer should occupy the position, and he wished to be wished to be relieved as soon as possible. It was moved by Mr I. Patterson that the resignation of Mr A. B. West be accepted with regret. The motion was seconded by Mr Jas. Noble, and carried. It was resolved, on the motion of Messrs Jas. Patterson and West, that the'annual show be held on the 9th and 10th of March. It was moved by Mr Jas. Patterson that the Railway Department be notified of show dates, and be asked to publish these in their pamphlet. The motion was carried. With regard to the schedule, it was resolved to have this printed at once. The offer of Mr 11. J. Gebbie was accepted, with thanks, to can-

vass the town! for entries for the show. The cup presented by Mr R. P. Hudson, M.P., was on show, and it was resolved

to semi a letter of thanks to the donor. It was resolved that circular forms be despatched to various firms throughout the Dominion for assistance, also that Mr A. E. Worry be informed of the dates of the show, and that his offer to conduct the children’s sports at the show lie accepted. Mr A. B. West spoke about the passing of one of the A. and P. Association’s members, the late Mr R. Wills, who had done excellent work in the many years he was connected with the show up till the time of his death. A motion of condolence was carried in silence, members standing; and a similar motion was also carried on the death of the late Mr F. B. Stallard. COURT NEWS. At a silting of the Magistrate’s Court at Reefton, before Mr W. Meldrum, S.M., James Lawn was charged with being in possession of an unregistered firearm for a longer period than seven days. He pleaded guilty, and was convicted and fined ss, and costs 10s, it also being ordered that the rille be forfeited to the Crown.

A resident was charged with having been found drunk in the Strand, Reefton, on December 24th; and that on the same date, while subject to a prohibition order, he did procure liquor. Mr Morgan (counsel) submitted that the recognisances taken by the police were invalid. The contention was upheld, and the cases were struck out. In a suit, McElwee and Sons v. Eric A. Robinson, judgment was given for plaintiff by default for £26 0s 2d, and costs £4 3s Cd.

Thomas McGillicuddy (Mr Morgan) v. Victor Alborn (Mr Patterson), a claim for £54 12s as rent on a section in Reefton used for grazing purpose# by defendant under an implied contract. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £ll 14s, and costs £7 Bs. Judgment for plaintiff in default was given in each of the following cases:— McMahon and Lee v. Lawrence Harold Harris, £l3 16s 4d, and costs £1 13s; Neil McViear v. William Clarke, £1 10s, and costs 8s; J. Wills and Co, Ltd, v. L n Hunter, £l4 2s Bd, and costs £3 2s; J. W. Osborne v. M. Parish, 16s 6d, and costs Bs.

A judgment debtor was ordered to pay £6 Is 6d forthwith, in default 14 days’ imprisonment in Greymouth Prison, the warrant to be suspended on payment of £1 per month —first payment on or before 21st January, 1928.

At a sitting of the Warden’s Court at Reefton, before Mr W. Meldrum, Warden, John Henry Roberts (Mr Patterson) applied for an ordinary prospecting license over 63 acres in Blk XIV, Reeftou S.D.—Adjourned to January 27. Francis D. Walker (Mr Morgan) applied for an ordinary prospecting license over 100 acres near Capleston.—Adjourned to January 27th. Archie Mitchell applied to surrender three mining privileges.—Adjourned to January 27th.
