REEFTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON ,January 13. The annual school excursion from Inangahua Junction to Hokitika will take i place on Wednesday, February Ist. Arrangements have been well carried out, an excellent train service has been arranged, and no efforts are being spared to provide a pleasant and enjoyable outing. The longest period without rain has been experienced here, and for [the past two weeks there has been no rain whatever. If it does not rain soon, there will be no water available. The grass and gardens are practically all withered up. A number of sawmills in the district arc not working owing to the scarcity of water. Misses Hill and Hawkey, of Timaru, arc spending a holiday in Reefton, as the guests of Mrs Waddell. Mr Arthur Stallard, who has been in Reefton for a few days, returned to Nelson yesterday morning. Mr Cyril McCawe, who has been spending the Christmas and New Year holidays with his parents, returned to Christchurch yesterday. Mr W. Mitchell, who has been spending the holidays with his parents, left yesterday, on his return to Wellington. Mrs G. Taylor and her son, Mr H. Taylor, left for Auckland yesterday morning. Mr Taylor, who has not enjoyed the best of health in the past, has now much improved. Mrs N. Morel, of Aratika, js at present on a short holiday visit to Reefton, as the guest of Mrs J. Osbourne, Globe Hotel. Mr Michael Kearns, who has been on a brief visit to Christchurch, returned to Reefton last evening. Mr T. McGillicuddy, of Rocklands, visited Reefton to-day. The many friends of Mrs G. E. A. Hubbard, who underwent an operation at Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, on Tuesday last, will be pleased to hear that she is well on the road to recovery.

The water in the Reef ton reservoir fell considerably yesterday, being five feet below normal. The water was turned off on Wednesday night, and last night at 7 o’clock, without any notice to the public. Consequently, much dissatisfaction was expressed by consumers. many of whom being unaware that it was to be cut off, and were left with, out any water for the night. Members of the Reefton D.H. School Committee journeyed to Ikumatua on Wednesday evening, and met delegates from the Ikamatua, Mawheraiti and Blackwater School Committees. The matter of a dental clinic was fully explained, and discussed at length, and at the conclusion of the conference all expressed themselves favourable to the establishing of the clinic at Reefton, and promised substantial assistance from the several school districts. It is ■therefore hoped that before long a dental clinic will be set up in Reefton, at which all school children will receive attention and considerable benefit.

Mrs F. Stewart, of Wellington (formerly of Reef ton), arrived in Reef ton by last night’s express. Mrs Stewart is the guest of Mrs W. Hughes.’ Mr H. Cresswell, of Christchurch, and Mr Steel, of Greymouth, visited Reefton to-day. Mr F. Baldwin, of Greymouth, is on a brief business visit to Reefton. Mr W. F. Brett, County Engineer, accompanied by Mr J. McLennan, of Ika. matua, left for Maruia this morning, to inspect county work there which Mr McLennan is undertaking. A large number of tourists are passing through Reefton at present, enjoying the fine weather. Many tents are to be seen along the roadside. The Reef ton Cricket Club’s usual fortnightly meeting was held in the Clubrooms on Thursday evening, Mr J. Warren occupying the chair. Correspondence was received from the Waiuta Cricket Club asking for a game at Waiuta on Sunday, 15th inst. It was resolved to notify the Waiuta Club that a Reefton team could not possibly travel to Waiuta on Sunday, but the Club would send a team three weeks from that date. It was agreed that a letter of condolence be sent to the relatives of the late Mr S. Durward <‘o.l. corning their sad bereavementj the motion being carried in silence, members standing. It was resolved that an extraordinary general meeting he held on Thursday, January 19th, 1927. All cricketers are advised to attend the Reefton Racecourse on Sunday, 15th June, at 1.30 p.m., to play an A. and B. Game, with a view to selecting a team to play Waiuta.
