WESTPORT NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, January 13. A meeting of the Carnival Committee was held in the Town Hall 01 Thursday evening, Mr P. Struthers pre. siding. A representative gathering of ladies and gentlemen were present. A letter from the Secretary of the Municipal Band was read explaining that some bandsmen would have to lose time, and asking for guarantee of £3. The letter was ‘‘received.” The V.V.E. wrote offering to put on a performance for the benefit of the Carnival Fund, if the Committee would provide a place for rehearsals.—This matter was left in the hands of Messrs Henley, Struthers and Black. The Secretary (Mr A. Black) road a statement of receipts and expenditure. The receipts totalled £238 Is lid, and expenditure £273 13s Bd, leaving a deficiency of £35 13s Bd. Accounts were passed for payment. Mr Parker stated that if creditors were asked for discount, as was done in the previous year, it would nearly extinguish the liability. He believed that the tradesmen were satisfied, and would cheerfully pay. He moved that guarantors be asked to pay 5s in the pound. After an amendment had been moved and debated, the motion was carried. Mr G. Martin moved that a letter of thanks be sent to the Denniston Pipo Band for their services. Without them, he said, there would have been no music in the procession, nor on Children’s Day. This was carried by acclamation../ as was also a vote of thanks to the Blackball and Municipal Bands for playing on New Year’s Eve. Votes were also passed thanking Mr Sherlock, Borough Council, and staff, and all those who had assisted in procuring greenery; the ladies of the Committee, who had worked so well, and to Mr and Miss Morgan, for the production of a picture to advertise Westport. Mr Morgan responded, intimating that the picture would be produced next Tuesday evening. Word had come from Wellington that it was the greatest topical picture produced in N.Z.. There were 2680 feet of film. The Chairman stated that a paragraph appearing in the Press as to an arrangement between Mr Dawson, proprietor of the merry-go-round, and other amusements, did not have the authorisation of the Committee. Mr Black and himself had spoken about the matter to Mr Dawson, but no agreement was made. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the business of the meeting. Another meeting will bo held, when the balance sheet has been prepared. Mr P. J. O’Regan and his son left this morning for the Landing, where they will conclude their holidays before returning to Wellington.

Shortly after 2.20 this afternoon a fire was discovered in a five.roomed house in Fonblanque Street, occupied by Miss Burns O’Connell. The brigade was soon on the scene, but the house was completely gutted before the blaze was extinguished. Two leads of hose were played on the house, but the timber went like matchwood, and within half an hour only the chaired shell of the house remained. Practically nothing was saved. The building was a very old one. The cinema picture taken in Westport during Christmas and Carnival festivities, and surrounding districts, >s certain to be of great interest. The scenes of the coal loading at the wharf of the Canopus, Komata and three tramp steamers is a great advertisement for the town, while the scenes at the Cascade and the Buller Gorge are also very fine. The picture includes many close-ups of the various events during Christmas week. It was intended to run the picture at a matinee on Thursday afternoon for the young people, but as this would clash with St John’s picnic, it has been decided to hold a matinee on Wednesday afternoon at the Victoria Theatre. Full particulars will be advertised later. Mrs Parry, of Gladstone Street, left for Christchurch this morning. Miss McCullum, Child Welfare Of_ ficer, left for Greymouth this morning.
