Trotting Notes. WORK AT ADDINGTON. (Special to Argus.) January 13. The inside of the big track at Addington was ploughed up after the recent Canterbury Park meeting, and, as it has not been rolled so as to set it down again, a good many of the trainers are doing their fast work on the small track (a half mile one) on the outside. The latest performances on the track are as follows:— Rose Marie, assisted by Concliff, was worked one and a-half miles, the pair being well out in the centre of the track all the way. Concliff had the inside berth on the first half of the journey, and the filly over the concluding stages. She covered the first mile and a-quarter well, but tired over the last bit. Should she go anywhere near as well at Ashburton as she did in her last two work-outs at Addington, she will set the back markers a task even to get near her. She does not leave too well. Sahib, with his owner in the saddle, did good useful work. Todd Bingen worked nicely over a mile, finishing on well. 1 Our Lady, after several sprinting•tasks, worked a mile fast. She has

lightened up a bit with her recent racing. Epigram, without straps, covered a couple of circuits (1| miles) nicely. A small Brent Locanda filly in A. Cox’s stable and a Brent Locanda filly in Butcher’s team worked nicely over a mile. Routine and Nelson Boy were companions in a useful work-out over a mile and a-quarter. They raced on terms all the way, both giving a good showing. Bessie Logan did her usual amount of steady work. This mare looks bright and well. Sarella worked very evenly over a mile and a-quarter, and looks absolutely improved by her recent successful racing. Golden Devon gave a pleasing showing when he .slipped over 14 miles in good style, though he made one break, which is very unusual for him. Audobcll, beginning from almost a stand, covered two miles really well. He looks mellow and bright. Meb was given good and solid, work, which she did well. J. J. Kennerley is now working a natty filly by First Fashion, who was first at the trotting gait, but is now a qualified pacer, and she goes in good, clean style. Jackie* Audubon, who is engaged at Forbury Park shortly, got through good solid work, doing plenty of it. Vice Admiral, without straps, covered 14 miles well, showing a good bit of speed over the concluding stages. J. J. Kennerley is now working Tiny Moon.

Reta Nelson, after going part of the way with several other horses, and working fast, covered half-a-mile in good style. The Author Dillon gelding in Berry’s stable had the Logan Pointer—Edith A filly, from the ’same stable, as a companion over 1} miles, which both went in good style, finishing on very well. Logan Holme alone rattled over 14 miles in taking fashion. Locanda General had Diamond Child as a mate in a good work-out over one and a-half miles. They were both wide out, but the former was always going easily alongside his stable mate. The Toff, looking robust, covered a couple of circuits freely and well. A bay maiden in Thomas’s stable covered a circuit well. Theckla Boy, Searchlight Lad, and a number of others worked on the small track. Elzear and Western Voyage gave a fine exhibition of clean, fast trotting over 14 miles, done in good time. Many contend Great Form should have won a race at the recent meeting here. He must keep the opposition busy at Ashburton on Saturday. Stunt Artist was sold at the Ashburton Boxing Day meeting, and has been turned out for a spell. D. Bennett has tired of Glandore, and has sent him back to Auckland. Airman, Vestas and the colt by Nelson Bingen—Sympathy, have been gelded and added to the list. TO-DAY’S ASHBURTON TROTS. THE PROSPECTS. (Special to Argus.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 12. Of the fifteen accepted for in the Melrose Handicap, of 14 miles, with a 3.42 class, no fewer than fourteen of them are on the limit. Tennis has been going to win for some time, but has not managed it so far. Glenrowen ran a fair race at Ashburton on Boxing Day, when he finished fifth close up in a much better field than this. He is, trained there by R. McDonald. Prince Ando goes fast, but 14 miles seems a bit far for him. Bingwood should read Bingenwood, who, after his Westland form, where he easily won a double, is not badly treated off the end, and as he will go 3.30, he must be considered with 12 seconds to spare on his handicap. Royal Locanda has a good private reputation, but has not shown it in public. Pageant will roost likely go out favourite, as at Addington last week he ran a good race and finished fourth, after being in front a quarter | of a mile from home. He worked really well with Western Voyage over 14 miles on Tuesday. Rose Marie is also in the same .stable as Pageant, and on Tuesday morning, with a very light boy in the saddle, reeled off the first mile of a mile and a-quarter in 2.14. She is not too reliable at the barrier, but has plenty of speed. Dundas Boy will be remembered as finishing very fast in the Westland Handicap at Greymouth, when in another two strides he would have beaten Dan Logan for second. This horse cost £7OO, and was bought on a 2.16 trial. Brown Admiral will be one of the best backed. On what looks a fairly open race, the chances of Dundas Boy, Pageant and Bingenwood look best.

Fifteen is again the main in the Selma Trot, a mile harness race, with a 2.24 class. Neerson, on his last i showing, will be well supported and is ; sure to go a good race. Trespass should be able to see the journey out from end to end. Rose Marie also figures in the Melrose. If she missed a rehandicap for this race, and would only leave the mark anything like right, she has only ten seconds to spare. Firebrand is one from 0. E. Hooper’s stable, and has a great private reputation, and is sure to be well hacked. Prologue I saw make a mess of Bingenwood over a mile and a-half journey on Wednesday morning. He has not raced for some time, but is alright. Royal Locanda is also in the Melrose. The above lot arc all off the end. Lady Minto, off 24yds, being a good beginner. should be up amongst the limit lot before half of them find their feet, and should go well. Killinchy, off 36yds, is also a good beginner, and quite at home over a mile and a quarter journey. Great Form, also off 36, should have a royal

show, as he is a good beginner. La Sonnette easily ran a mile at Brighton in 2.14 before he was taken to Greymouth, and won a double, off 72yds. Being a good beginner, he will soon be up amongst the limit horses. Doris Pointer, also off 72yds, won at Ashburton on Boxing Day, but was then on 24yds behind. She won in good style, l.ut several in this race should hold her safe. If I were sure Prologue would leave the mark right (that is his defect), I would look no further, but with several engaged earlier in the day in the Melrose, one may be safe in saying
