The work of dealing with the pakihi lands on the West Coast is very hopefully regarded by Dr Easterfield, of the Cawthron Institute, Nelson. He stated it aims at tho utilisation of some 250.000 acres of waste “pakihi” lands in Westland and at Collingwood. The soil map of Waimea County, he said, had been most useful to prospective purchasers of land, who, by referring to it, could learn the general character of any particular property. The institute had analysed over 1000 samples of soils. For good reasons, it had consistently declined to do such work for private persons. Due to the Institute’s advice, inferior land on the Moutere Hills has been made capable of carrying more than two sheep to the acre after top-dressing and a scheme of manuring had trebled the yield of Nelson raspberries between one season and tho next. Many orchardists who followed tho institute’s advice were getting good returns on indifferent land, but this land, without scientific treatment, gave very poor returns indeed.

for tobacco. If you want to give a present that will appeal to nearly every man give him something to smoke, preferably a bit of good “cut up,” and the best cut-up tobacco is our own New Zealand grown. This ’baccy is the purest of any because (unlike the importtai) it contains only a minimum quan-. tity of nicotine. Consequently it can he smoked all day long “and then some” with enjoyment and without injury X 1 health. So a really acceptable (and inexpensive) birthday gift is, say, ' a pound (or a couple of pounds) of New Zealand tobacco. It is made in various I strengths. “Riverhead Gold” is mild. “Navy Cut” (Bulldog) is medium, and ‘Cut Plug No. 10” (Bullshead) is full flavoured. —Advt, . .
