BATHING TRAGEDY. PALMERSTON N., January 10. A bathing tragedy occurred in tho Pohangina River at Ashhurst yesterday afternoon. The victim was Denis Crowley, carrier, Ashhurst, aged forty. Deceased, in company with another man. was swimming in a pool, when apparently he collapsed, death being due, it is believed, to heart failure. FARMER’S SUDDEN DEMISE. MARTON, January 10. Alexander David Cockburn, 68. a well-known Rangitikei farmer, was found dead in a paddock, adjoining the homestead, near Marton, yesterday. It is believed that death was due to a heart attack. Deceased previously suffered several serious illnesses He was unmarried. PORT NICHOLS ON TRAGEDY. WELLINGTON, January 10. A v erdict of accidental drowning was returned at the inquest on David Lauder, one of the party on a yacht that capsized on Christmas Eve. The body of Donald McKay, the other victim, has not been recovered. WATERSIDER’S TRAGIC END. t NAPIER, January 10. The unknown man, who was found hanged on the Marine Parade on Sunday morning, was identified as James George Tinson, watersider aged about 52. It is not known if he had any New Zealand relatives. He was understood to be a single man. He resided at Napier in 1925, but his whereabouts since then are unknown. A formal finding was returned at the inquest. LITTLE GIRL DROWNED. NAPIER, January 9. Joyce Williams, the five-year-old daughter of a Westshore resident, was drowned in the inner harbour to-day Deceased was on a small jetty at Westshore with another child aged three. Apparently Joyce fell off the jetty, and by the time the other child informed the mother no sign of the unfortunate girl could be found. The body later was recovered by the police.

LATER. At the inquest on Joyce Williams, a formal verdict was returned. KNOCKED DOWN BY TRAMCAR. CHRISTCHURCH,. January 10. Seeing a little girl running a scooter along the tram line in Addington this evening, and a tram bearing down upon her Gertrude Taylor, a young woman, rushed across the road to save her. The motorman applied the brakes, but the child was caught by the tram and carried fifteen feet. Miss Taylor, however, was knocked over and received injuries to her head and a fractured leg, being in a serious condition when admitted to the hospital. FALL OVER CLIFF. CHRISTCHURCH. January 10. Though falling down a forty foot eliff to the roadway below, at Scarborough Sumner, to-day, Magnus Hay, aged 8, received bad injuries to the head. LAD CRUSHED BY LORRY. GISBORNE. January 10. While a lorry laden with wool was proceeding to Gisborne from Ngatapa, a mishap occurred to the gear, and a younger brother of the driver, William Edward Leslie ’fifteen held, the gear in place for some time but on turning a bend, a tyre blew out, and the lad jumped, and the lorry passed over him. He sustained a i fractured skull, fractured pelvis jnd is in a critical condition.
