REEFTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)} REEFTON, January 10. The totalisator investments for the Reefton Jockey Club during the two days’ racing totalled £15,245 10s, as against £16,948 last year, showing a decrease of £1712. Mr Geo. Crossman, of Grey Road, Reefton, whilst cycling to work at Waiuta on Sunday last, had the misfortune to have a spill with his cycle, through the head of his machine breaking. Two small bones of his forearm were broken as a result of the mishap. To conclude the summer holidays, a merry-go-round with three side shows arrived in Reefton on Sunday from Westport, and last evening the showmen were doing excellent business. News has been received of the death of Mrs Howard, of Hokitika. The. deceased lady was a native of Wales. Mrs S. Austin, of Reefton, was a step-daughter of deceased. The little girl Lee, who had her skull badly fractured in the motor car accident on Friday last, underwent an operation on Saturday, and is reported to be making satisfactory progress. It is very pleasing to note that the little sufferer’s condition is improving. Mr and Mrs 11. McConachie and Mr and Miss Sims, of Nelson, who nave been visiting Christchurch, returned heme this morning. Mr Sweetman, cl' Waiuta, who has been visiting Reetton, left for Greymouth this evening. Mr D. McLaughlin left for Greymouth this afternoon. The success of Miss M. C. Wilson’s racehorse Spodo in the Farewell Handicap on Saturday was the most popular win of the meeting, and when her colours passed the post, there was much loud cheering. Mr and Mrs E. H. McAlister anl daughter, of Adelaide, arrived in Reefton from Westport yester day. Mr McAlister many years ago was a member of the staff of the Inangahua Herald, the late Mr Walter Aitken( who was later proprietor of the Westport News) being then foreman on the Herald staff. Subsequently Mr McAlister went to Wellington, where ho worked on the N.Z. Times and then to Adelaide, where he carried on a business on his own account as a master printer. He now has a staff of 40 hands. The visitors are touring the Dominion, and return to Adelaide early in Fezruary. Mr Geo. B. Mclnroe and Mr J. Jobberns, of Ikamatua, visited Reefton last evening.
