LENIENT SENTENCE FOR DRUNKEN MOTORIST. WELLINGTON, January 9. At 5.25 on Saturday, the Pet one police received word that a motorist evidently in a drunken condition, had narrowly avoided collision on the Hutt Road. The driver was subsequently arrested and appeared before Mr. A. Coles and Mr. D. G. McEwen, Justices of the Peace at the Petone Court today, charged with being drunk while in charge of a car. The Senior Sergeant said that when arrested, accused was very drunk and by no means in a fit state to drive the Mr. Mazen garb, for accused, pleaded guilty, but submitted that his client had an excellent character, and the place on Sunday evening, Mr. W. H. Accused was fined £l9, but the Justices ordered the suppression of Eis name, though cancelling his license till March 31. THIEVES STEAL £5O WORTH OF JEWELLERY. CHRISTCHURCH, January 9. A clean sweep of practically all the jewellery she possessed was made by thieves who visited the home of Mrs mond. The value of the missing articles is over £5O. Mrs Henderson was absent at. the seaside, but paid periodical visits to her home. On Friday evening, thieves entered the house by bursting the lock off the back door.
