An extensive search for an uncharted rock north of Gisborne, which the steamer Northumberland is believed to have struck last January, is to be made next month by the minesweeper Wakakura and the sloops Laburnum and Veronica. An area of six square miles is to be surveyed minutely. LLOYDS’ SHIPBUILDING RETURNS. LONDON. January 8. Lloyds’ shipbuilding returns for the quarter ending December 31 show a world-wide improvement in the shipbuilding world, the figures being 3,118,721 tons. The figures for Britain and Ireland are double those of December, 1926, namely 1,579,713 tons now building, of which over 200,000 tons will be registered in the Dominions. Germany is building 472,295 tons, while Italy, Holland, France and Sweden are building over 200,000 tone each, but in no country is the tonnage commenced. During the quarter Sufficient to replace the tonnage was launched. There is a remarkable increase in tanker construction, which represents nearly 24 per cent, of the total of the world tonnage under construction.
