Mrs A. H. Wilde returns to-day from a holiday visit to Hamilton.

Messrs Black and Ness, of Nelson, who are on a tour of the Coast, arrived here yesterday.

Mr M. Forman, of the local Magistrate’s Court staff, is being transferred to Westport.

Misses Lilburn and N. Hopkins leave on Thursday on a visit to the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers.

Mr and Mrs W. Larcombe were passengers by yesterday’s express from Christchurch, and return to Greymouth from Te Kinga to-day.

Sir Charles Skerrett, Chief Justice of New Zealand, accompanied by Miss Skerrett, arrived yesterday in Grey mouth.

The recently-consecrated Bishop of Waikato, Dr Cherrington, is shortly to be married to Miss E. D. Price, of Auckland.

Mr A. Baker, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Hokitika, is at present in charge of the Greymouth branch of the Bank, during the absence on holiday of the manager, Mr Carey.

Mr D. Anderson, of Ngahere, yesterday underwent an operation at the Grey River Hospital, and is now reported to be in a satisfactory condition.

After a very enjoyable visit to South Westland seenie resorts, five Wellington ladies yesterday left Westport for Nelson, Misses O. Sharp, M. Ellis, D. Innes, C. and R. Muir.

Rev G. H. MeNeur, Moderator of the N.Z. Presbyterian Assembly, has left the Dominion en route for China, where he was formerly engaged on million work.

Among the guests staying at the Albion Hotel are Mr and Mrs Francis, Mr and Mrs Lewis, Mr and Mrs McLean, Mr and Mrs James, Messrs Neil (Christchurch), A. Mr Wm. Berdinner, a well-known pioneer resident of the Kumara district, died on Sunday night at the Westland Hospital at the age of 86 years. Deceased was a Cornishman, and in his day was an athlete of note. He leaves a son, Mr Edward Berdinner (Westport) and two daughters, Mrs Morris (Wellington) and Miss Mary Berdinner (Auckland). The funeral takes place to-day at Kumara.

After an absence from Buller for 47 years, Mr E. J. McAllister, a native of Brighton, has returned on a visit to Westport, in company with his wife and daughter. He has a thriving printing business in the city of Adelaide. He used once to work on the Herald at Beefton and later on the New Zealand Times.

The Afghan Amir and his party, who are on a European tour, have reached Naples from Egypt, and, according to a cable, they were on arrival welcomed with enthusiasm. At Borne the Italian King and Queen, Crown Prince and Signor Mussolini welcomed their Afghan Majesties. The city was decorated and the troops lined the route. Two aeroplanes escorting the Amir from Naples at Borne. One crashed, the aviator being fatally injured. The other continued the flight.

At its last meeting, the Wellington Trades and Labour Council unanimously decided to invite Mr H. E. Holland M.P., Leader of the Opposition, to lay the foundation stone of the new Trades Hall at Wellington, which building is also to include premises for “The New Zealand Worker” newspaper and printing business. It is intended that the ceremony shall take place while delegates from all over New Zealand are in Wellington for the Conference which has been called by the Alliance of Labour.

Many Greymouth friends will regret to learn of the death of Miss Agnes Fitzgerald, formerly of Greymouth, who passed away at Wellington yesterday after a lengthy illness. The deceased, who was a native of Grey mouth, was the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs J. Fitzgerald, who in the early days kept the Dan O Connell Hotel, Richmond Quay, and later the Suburban Hotel, Tainui St. She was 50 years of age, and till a few years ago resided in Greymouth, by all who knew her. She leaves one where she was very highly esteemed brother, Mr Maurice J. Fitzgerald, Wellington, and formerly of mouth, and one sister, Mrs Brookes husband, Mr S. T. Brookes (Mana* of The Terrace, Wellington, whose ger of the Wellington Branch of the ( Bristol Piano Coy., and formerly of Greymouth) died only on New Year’s Day. The relatives will have the sincere sympathy of many West ?oast friends in their bereavement. ■ ’ 40
