HOKITIKA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, November 22. A cold westerly wind with intermittent showers and sunshine has made the weather to-day most unpleasant, and it is hoped that the summer will soon make its appearance. The lorries of the Central Dairy j Factory are now to be seen heavily laden with cream, which puts one in mind of the fact that the factory is I approaching the busiest time of the I year. j The annual examinations for (lie , Civil Service and Matriculation have been conducted at St. Andrew’s Hall during the last few days. Several residents are anxious to secure samples of the coal being prospected in the Lake Kanieri district. It is understood that there is some local capital behind the party of miners engaged in the operations. Miss H. S. Hunt, at present in charge of Waiuta Hospital, has been appointed matron of the Westland Hospital. When visiting Koiterangi on Saturday, County Councillors were much impressed with the advisability of continuing the extension of Station Road, a new work in hand, till it links up with Whitcomb Road, and so serves a largo area of land very suitable for dairying if ready access were provided. The funeral of the late Mrs Wynne took place on Saturday, the Rev. Canon Hamilton conducting the services at All Saints Church and at the graveside. Borough Affairs. The Borough Council met at 5 p.m. yesterday. Present: Mr W. J. Jeffries, Deputy-Mayor, (in the chair), Dr Teichelniann, Messrs J. King-, E. W. Heenan, T. W. Duff, D. J. Evans and A. R. Elcock. An apology was made for the absence of the Mayor and Mr Armstrong. The Auditor-General wrote forwarding the balance-sheet for the year ended 31st March, 1922, duly certified to as correct. It was resolved that the balance-sheet bo received and the Chairman be authorised to sign same as settled. The tender of Mr W. E. Richards for printing it was accepted. Mr Evans moved that the Council extend to Mr and Mrs Perry their deep sympathy in their recent bereavement. The motion was seconded by Mr. E. Heenan and carried in silence, members standing. Telegrams- were road from the Hon. •T. G. Coates notifying in connection with the tour of Hon. L. S. Amery. Under-,Secretary of State for the Colonies, that Hon. Amery and party would arrive iu Hokitika from Ross by train on Monday, December 12th, at 12.30 p.m., and would leave again at 2.30 p.m., when the visitor would be pleased to meet the general public. The Chairman stated invitations were sent out to tho present meeting and the County Chairman (Mr J. A. Murdoch), the Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr W. T. Morpeth) were present to discuss what action should be taken. Mr Murdoch said as County Chairman he was prepared to go to Waiho and meet the distinguished visitor and party, together with other County Councillors and heads of Departments. He suggested one function at Hokitika. It was resolved that an endeavour be made to have the arrival at Hokitika made by 11.30 a.m., instead of 12.30 p.m., so as to give more time for a public function, and if this were possible that Hon. Amery be asked to give a public address immediately on arrival for an hour, at tho Princess Theatre, It was stated the party would lunch' at Keller’s Hotel, and it was decided to offer a public luncheon, and to reserve space at the theatre for school children. An executive was set up to make the necessary arrangements. Hospital Matters. At a meeting of the Westland Hospital Board there were present Messrs J. J. Breeze (chairman), G. Davidson, W. Jeffries, T. W. Duff, E. A. Wells. L. 11. Morel. Apologies were made for Messrs Spiers and Meharry. The Surgeon-Superintendent reporting on 30th September patients numbered 44. Admitted during October, 17 males. 13 females. Total treated, 38 males, 36 females—74. Discharged, cur.cd 16 males, 16 females, relieved, 1 male, 1 female; died, 2 males, 2 females. Total discharged, 19 males, 15 females—3B. Remaining in hospital, 31st October, 19 males. 17 females—36. In hospital for two month's, 9 males, 7 females —16. Tlie Treasurer reported: Receipts £15711 0s 7d; payments £796 3s 8d; credit balance £25 18s 2d. Accounts amounting to £448 5s 5d were passed. It was resolved so as not to clash with the Wireless Appeal to postpone the Hospital Appeal till December 10 and 11; a public meeting of helpers to be called for 28th November. It was resolved on the motion of the Chairman and Mr, Wells that application be made for a loan of £lOOO for payment of the purchase of the maternity home in Hampden Street. Dr Valentine wrote asking what action had been taken in reference to concessions for maintenance to Timber Workers’ Union members.—lt was resolved to reply that the Timber Workers’ Union had failed to reply to the offer of the Board. Ross and Kumara Borough Councils forwarded their levies. The Forest Service wrote in reference to planting of native shrubs. Mr Davidson gave particulars of an area of 5 to 6 acres, wheih it was proposed to plant in Kar.aki and other shrubs for cattle feed. The Minister of Hospitals wrote approving of purchase of maternity home, and Mrs M. Halliday forwarded receipt for the first instalment on account of the purchase of her maternity homo. The Director-General advised that there was no subsidy for, Xmas cheer. The Public Trust Office advised consideration of application for a loan of £lOOO at 6 per cent. The Public Trust Office, Greymouth, forwarded balance of claim for maintenance duo in a deceased estate. A vote of sympathy with Mr A. Clifton, a former member, on the death of his wife was passed on the motion of the Chairman and Mr Davidso*.
