RUNANGA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) At the ordinary meeting of the Runanga. Borough Council, held in the |Council Chambers, there were present: His Worship 11m Mayor, (Mr. R. McTaggart Esq.,) Crs. Armstrong, Boddy, Malone., Conncl and Southward. The Finance Committee, which had met earlier reported that accounts amounting to £1.65/14/3 (this amount including the first two instalments of the Hospital levy) had been passed for payment. The minutes were confirmed as read. The outward correspondence was approved and inward correspondence was dealt with as follows: — Advice from Public Trustee that Public. Trust Department was administering property of George Lemon, deceased; from Treasury Department, advice of £2/16/- fees and fines lodged in Borough account; from Lands Department, advising Council or three M.R.’s which have not been gazetted; from Minister of Railways informing the Council he would give its representations further consideration in connection with footway and wicket gates at Carroll St. railway crossing; from Under Secretary Mines Department, advising there arc no cast iron pipes at Kumara available for the reticulation purposes of the Borough; also information concerning £25 due thq Domain Board; further advice from Mines Department, stating £25 due to Domain Board had*been lodged with District Treasury Officer; the Deputy Chief Inspector of Explosives forwarded amend ed scale of charges for the storage of dangerous goods; the Council to advise the Inspector of the attitude taken by it in the matter. It was resolved that this Council favour the new scale of charges, the Department to be notified accordingly. The Tauranga Borough Council wrote inviting support for its resolution: “That the Government be approached to increase the minimum allowance of £5O for unauthorised expenses to £lOO, and that the Member for the District be asked for his advice in the matter.” Ft was resolved that this Council support the resolution, the Minister of Finance and Mr. H. E. Holland, M.P., to be communicated with regarding same. The Secretary of the School Committee wrote asking Council to share evenly with Committee the cost in the matter of cleaning school frontage along Duncan Street.—Received. Mr. F. Magee wrote tendering £2 for the lease of Sec. 2 Bk. XT M.R. Runanga. This tender was accepted and the lease granted, Mr. Halliday’s grazing lease over the same area to be revoked on one month’s notice in writing. The Hospital Secretary advised the estimates for the current year, the Runanga quota for the current year to be £264 5s Bd. The Hospital Board representative ’s report was received as ■satisfactory. The Technical School and Power Board representative was not present. On behalf of the deputation to the Railway Traffic Manager, it was reported that altogether the deputation to Mri Chapman had respited favourably. There would be a few .new carriages in the course of a yveek or so. Concerning the open drain in front of the station, the Traffic Man ager had stated in this matter really did not come under his Department. However, he would bring the matter under the District Engineer’s notice. As to electrically lighting the station and surroundings. This matter, he said, would entail a large expenditure, that is for the whole of New Zealand, somewhere in the vicinity of one and a half million pounds. It was pointed out to him that the Grey Electric Power Board would be able to instal electric ity at the station at a very little cost. He promised to look into the matter As regards the train being late, probably this was the miners’ fault, an/1 if run to time, it might inconvenience the miners. However, if it was to run to time, he would see that it did so. He said he would also try and get a fireplace put in the main waiting room at the Runanga station. The report was received as very favourable. It fas resolved that the Grey Electric Power Board be written to recommending its suggesting a price to the Railway Department, through Mr. Chapman for electrically lighting the Runanga station and surroundings. It was resolved the Traffic Manager be written tn asking if it would be possible for his Department to erect a shelter shed, with a fireplace, at Dunollie station foi*the convenience of the 150 miners that board the train there. There is. no means of shelter at this station and it means the men are exposed to all kinds of weather whilst waiting for the train. This matter was omitted at the recent deputation. The Roadman’s report was received as Satisfactory. The Works’ Committee reported on the dangerous state of the drain between Ward and Duncan Streets ;also as to a nuisance to ratepayers in Dunollie caused by a natural drain running through from Neilson’s to Shaw’s section. It was resolved that the drain from Ward to Duncan Streets be re-opened immediately and left open. It was resolved that Messrs Neilson, Airy, Shaw and Kaye and Mrs Armstrong bo approached re the cementing of the natural drain. It was resolved that the Lauds Department be written to asking that Section D 3 Bk. IV, Dunollie be made a Munici- ' pal Reserve. Regarding the gymna- i sium books, Cr. Baddeley was asked to I audit the books. It was resolved that a donation of £2 be given to the caretaker of the Gymnasium; such amount to be considered extra to the salary now due to him. A lease draft from Mr. Kitchingham was received as satisfactory. An opportunity for Runanga residents to secure bargains in men’s women’s and children’s clothing; also in house furnishings, carpets and boots and shoes, will be afforded at the Gymnasium to-day, to-morrow ami on Wednesday, when Messrs Stephens Bros, are holding a genuine clearance sale.
