RUNANGA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) On Thursday afternoon a social function was «held at the residence of Mrs I. Spedding, a large number being present, and a very enjoyable afternoon was spent. Musical items were rendered by the following:—Songs,Mesdames King, Kendrick, Ogle, Smitheran, and Miss Meadlin; recitations, Mrs Spedding and Miss Meadlin. The, lucky games wore won by Mrs J. Braithwaite and Miss Peggy Southward. The accompanists were Mesdames O’Neill and Upward. Mrs Kendrick, on behalf of the ladies present, thanked the hostess for the most enjoyable afternoon, and a happy gathering was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” The Hockey Club assembled at the residence of Mrs Glover on Thursday evening to make a presentation to two of their former club members, Mesdames Earle and Haisty. During the evening games, dancing, and musical items were the order. Songs were rendered by Misses K. Garvey (“Oh, Charlie”), D. Williams, P. and E. Powell, B. Garvey, M. King, I. O’Neill, E. Harrison, 11. Mossop. M. Little, Messrs R. Naisbitt, B. Timlin, B. Tallentyre, F. Hawken, T. Shields; and recitations by Misses D. Marshall, R. Duggan, L. Wright, and Messrs V. Pattinson, J. Haisty, J. Eprle; a cornet solo by Mr N. Griffiths; and stories by Mesdames Haisty and Earle. The accompanists were Mrs O’Neill and Miss Little. A “Personality” game was won by Miss I. O’Neill. Miss M. Little (captain of the Hockey Club),-in making the presentations, spoke in glowing terms of the services of both their guests whilst members of the club. Their little presents (a set of jugs each) were given with the heartiest of best wishes for their future happiness by their former club colleagues. “For they are jolly good fellows” was heartily sung. Mr Haisty, in responding on behalf of his wife, said he wished to thank Miss Little for her kind remarks and the Hockey Club for their beautiful present. Mr Earle responded on behalf of his wife, thanked the Hockey Club for their beautiful present, and all present for the enjoyable evening. (Applause.) The gathering broke up in the early hours with a hearty vote of thanks for the hostess and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” On Wednesday evening a euchre tournament in aid of the King and Queen Carnival was held in the Druids’ Hail. The winners were:—Mrs Glover Ist; Mr J. Duggan 2nd; Mrs Pinn 3rd. The Druids’ fortnightly “Old Timers” Dance will be held in the Miners’ Hall this evening. These dances arc just as popular as ever, but at the same time the younger members of the community arc waiting patiently for the “Jazz” night.
