ROSS NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent). Patrons of Rugby football were treated on Saturday to a spirited contest between the local team and the Excelsior A. Juniors. From first to last both teams went “all out” and the odds at the finish were very close, Ross winning by three to nil—a. try scored by A. Parker in the first spell. Excelsior placed only thirteen men in the field and it is highly probable that this shortage was responsible for Jheir defeat. Their failure, thereq fore, reflected no discredit upon their play, which was, Throughout, bright, keen and full of dash. The combination and vim of the visitors seemed rather to increase as the game went on and the whistle sounded just as they were approaching the top of their form. Throughout the game their scrum work showed a marked superiority, but frequent mishandling by the backs prevent' ed their making effective use of this advantage. In almost every case the quick adjustment of the Ross forwards nullified the impending Excelsior rush, the ball ball being smartly transferred to the backs. The visitors were, however, dogged in defence, as the narrow Ross victory testifies.

The ladies’ hockey match, promised for the same day, did not eventuate. A waggish suggestion that the delay was due to the dressmakers’ failure was indignantly refuted by the captain, wh i explained that the non-arrival of stic'i was the cause of the delay. A meeting of the club was held on Friday evening in the Coronation Hall. A suggestion was made that a “Hardup Social” should be held. This was decided upon, and the entrance fee fixed at 2/- for gentlemen «and a basket or a plate for ladies. The local Cricket Club held a meet ing on the same evening, and decid that the annual ball should be held on the Bth July. The music on this occasion will be supplied by the local orchestra.

Very successful euchre and dance parties in aid of the Fire Brigade funds were held, the former taking place at the Coronation Hall, and the latter at the Totara Hall. Glorious weather continues, charae terised by gorgeous sunrises ’and sunsets, with keen frosts at night. Rev. J. W. Hayward, the Aloderator of the Presbyterian Church in this di* trict, paid a visit to the local church yesterday and preached in the morning to a good congregation. In the afternoon he was motored to Hari Hari. and in the evening to Wataroa, preaching at both places.
