AMUSEMENTS.
OPERA HOUSE — TO-NIGHT. “THE RUNAWAY.” What happens when a pretty little “hard-boiled” actress hides from justice because of a crime she hasn’t committed? That’s the basic thought about which William de Millc’s new Paramount production, “The Runaway,” is based. In the hotel room of a man she loves, while “on location” with a movie company, he is accidentally shot and seriously wounded. A young Kentucky mountaineer on the hills is by the girl appealed to for help and agrees to take her across the State line. He asks only two things—that she change her clothes and wash the
signs of “a painted woman” from her face. So he takes her home—a very much frightened little girl in overalls a. big for her. Do they fall in love with each other? How do the mountain folk take to the girl? Clara Bow’s the girl, Warner Baxter the rescuer, and William Powell the man who is shot, while George Bancroft is seen as Baxter’s enemy. It come to the Opera House to-night for the last time. WEDNESDAY—CONWAY TEARLE TN “THE SPORTING LOVER.” It lias remained for E. M. Asher’s First National picturisation of “The Sporting Lover,” starring Conway Tearle, at the Opera Housp on Wednesday Matinee and night, to provide the
most unique romantic setting of the year. “The Sporting Lover” deals with wartime romance and racehorses, and Mr Tearle, as Captain Terrance Connaughton, finds his ideal of a wife in Barbara Bedford, as Lady Gwendolyn, amid the chaos of a battle front air raid. The foundation of their romance is built amid the ruins of a field hospital, where the couple realise their great love while fighting for life buried beneath piles of earth tossed over them by bursting bombs. It is believed that the romantic scenes from Mt Tearle’a starring vehicle possesses the most dramatic climax yet seen in a war play.
