BURWOOD MURDER.

VICTIM’S INTENTION. To go to Wellington. (Per Press Assn.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 17. In connection with the Burw >od r fnurdcr, it has been established that Miss Scarff stayed at the Hotel Federal from June 9 to June 11. Mr T. W. Lewis, proprietor, was approached, but he stated that he was unable to give any information at the moment. From other sources it was learned that Miss Scarff had registered ender an assumed name at the hotel. She Left on Tuesday evening, hav2 .g ] reviously communicated with a taxidriver, with whom he was acquaint She informed certain female met tbers of the stall’ that she was going to Wellington. Nothing more was seen of her until the discovery of the body on Wednesday afternoon. The police have, so far not recovered the two suit cases, which Miss Scarff had her at the Federal Hotel. The suit cases were removed from the hotel on Tuesday evening, it is believed, with the intention that they would be taken to the Ferry boat. Yesterday afternoon, the police interviewed the driver of the taxi which called at the Federal Hotel for Miss Scarff on Tuesday evening, and took a statement from him. TAXI-DRIVER’S EXAMINATION. CHRISTCHURCH, June 16. The taxi-driver from the police in terviewed yesterday for eight hours on end, told a reporter this morning that he had not seen Miss Scarff since Saturday at noon, and she then said sho was going north. He had given the police his fingerprints when asked to do so.

WAS GOING NORTH WITH A MAN CHRISTCHURCH, June 17. From inquiries made to-day, it is learned that the girl stayed at Hie Federal Hotel, under the name of Miss Armstrong. When recognised by a waitress, she made a certafn disclosure, and said she intended leaving for the North with a man on Tuesday night.

Norman Clyde McPherson, wanted in connection with the murder of Martha Quin, was arrested at Bathurst. THE LUGGAGE. PLACED BY GIRL AT TRAM OFFICE. CHRISTCHURCH, June 17. An inquest on the murdered woman, Gwendoline Scarff, was opened to-day, but only evidence of identification was taken, and the inquest was adjourned.. The police to-day located the two suitcases which belonged to the girl. She had removed them from the hotel where she had stayed, and she had left them at the Tramway Luggage Office, in preparation, it is assumed, for her intended departure for Wellington on the evening of the day when she was murdered.

MISSING ARTICLES. It is said that the contents of the suit-cases give no information of any value. The girl ordinarily carried a handbag and a purser in which she kept correspondence and snapshots, .but both the handbag and the purse are missing. NOT THE MAN. The police have investigated the story of a man in pyjama trousers being seen at North Brighton on the day of the murder. The police arc satisfied that man had nothing to do with it. There have been no developments today. .
