HOKITIKA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) At the Hokitika Athletic and Cycling Club’s Sports, to be held on Cass Square to-morrow (Tuesday), a novel attraction will be the whippet racing events. Six of these fast sprinters have been purchased by local enthusi asts from the best kennels in Canterbury, and judging by the popularity of this sport in Christchurch, these events should prove an additional attraction to a first class programme. King, A. B. Blcoek, F. Orr, H. T. Parry and J. Lloyd. The Treasurer reported receipts £1092/7/4, payments £789/5/2, credit balance £727/11/5, loan account credit £ll7/7/4. Accounts amounting to. £534 5/6 were passed for payment. The Manager of Abattoirs (J. Jarman) reported that during March there were examined: 25 cows, 41 heifers, 53 bullocks, 263 sheep, 80 lambs, 15 pigs, 15 calves. Condemned 6 cows, 1 bullock, 1 pig. Fees for period £76/4/6 (same month last year £7O/10/6). Cr. Orr moved that steps be taken to erect concrete in place of the silent policemen ,at street corners and that as to parking places, the Council confer with the police. This was agreed to; Crs. Orr and Elcock to represent the Council. The Foreman was authorised to close in a drain on the south eastern corner of Cass Square and improve the roadway. The foreman reported the roof of the Town Clock to be leaking. The necessary repairs were authorised and it was resolved to apply to the police authorities for permission to remove the monument to the corner of the police reserve adjacent. The Foreman reported Cass Square had been cleaned up, and a section of footpath on the northern side of the Square was tar-sealed. Hampden Street drain was cleared of growth and cleaned from Bealey Street up to Rolleston Street. A blow-out took place in the water main in Hall Street, near Gibson’s Quay. This was repaired. A new pipe was put in in Fitzherbert Street near the Church of England. The pipe removed had a rotten stave in it. Several leaks in different parts of the town were repaired. A water connection was also repaired in Bealey Street. Seven 2ft. 3in. concrete, and two Ift. pipes were made this month. For the month the water in the reservoir averaged 7ft. 2in. Hokitika High School Board asked for payment of rent of baths £2B/15/-. The Mayor moved the amount be paid. Seconded by Cr. Lloyd and carried. It was resolved that an application be made for a reduction ot the rental. The Highways Board forwarded statmeent of receipts, the Borough’s share being £144/13/4. Westland Chamber of Commerce enclosed proposal to hold a New Zealand conference at Wellington, and Inviting attendance of delegate at Conmty Chambars. It was resolved the Mayor and Mr Jeffries represent the Council. J. Timpson quoted price for removal of trees on ( ass Square. Received: consideration deferred.
