A coincidence in having similar initials, surname, and business caused an Auckland man (says the Star) to be served with a summons not intended for him. It was merely the difference between James and John that caused the trouble, and as the initial “J" was on the summons there was nothing to show the bailiff it was the wrong man. The proper course would have been for the man who got the summons to file a defence that he was not the person intended. Later he did go to the court, and found that judgment had gone against him by default. The case came again before Mr E. C. Cutten, S.M., at flic Magistrate’s Court, when Mr L. G. Simpson .got the judgment set-’ aside, and was allowed one guinea costs. Mr Cutten (remarked that, in the event of the wrong man getting a summons the court should at once be notified.

A correspondent of the Auckland Star asks a contemporary whether r person who was born in New Zealand and who has lived here for over 60 years is a pioneer or an early settler. There is certainly often laxity in the use of the two terms, but a pioneer, strictly speaking, is one who is the first to settle in any part of the country and to seeing it under cultivation. An early settler is one who has come to the country in the days of its infancy, as a developed land. He may be a pioneer, but he is certainly not one if he is reaping the advantages of work done by previous settlers or pioneers. A person born in the country can, under no circumstances, be called a pioneer unless when reaching maturity he devotes his energies to breaking-in part of the country hitherto untouched.

A statement made at AVellington a few days ago by the Minister of Defence that last month aeroplanes passed over West Coast towns without being seen is scarcely’ correct. Alore than once the machines in question were sighted at a great height by residents in the country districts between here and Hokitika. The planes, including a

new De Haviland bombing machine, have been collecting data as to air currents for the new’ Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and in doing this the Alinister states the pilots directions have been to fly at 3,000 feet for fifteen minutes and then rise to 6000 feet and remain at that level for fifteen minutes and similiarly at 9000 feet and 12,000 feet and, if the pilot so desired, he could rise to 15,000 feet, flying thus in a succession of steps. Out Alarsjen w’ay these planes

were sighted and also further south. The Alinister says that on least four or five occasions during Afarch machines actually crossed the Alps and went as far as Greymouth and Hokitika, passing directly’ over these towns at heights of from 10,000 feet to 15,000 and one plane did the run from Wigram Aerodrome to Greymouth and back in a couple of hours. Yesterday Captain Findlay, of Sockburn, was at Trentham ■ after flying up from Canterbury in about two and a quarter hours at 104 miles an hour against a north-easter for part of the journey’. Findlay flew along the coast against the nor-easter at an altitude of 6000 feet as far as the mountains, then diverted, and passed over Blenheim across the Straits at 8000 feet. He thinks that there should I be a landing place nearer Wellington than Trentham. He begins the return flight this morning at ten o’clock.
