HOKITIKA NOTES .

(Our Own Correspondent.) At the meeting of the Borough Council on Friday a motion of sympathy with the Mayor (Mr Geo. Perry) in his recent bereavement by the death of his sister, Mrs W.- McKay, was passed on tho motion of Councillor Heinz.

The foreman reported to the Borough Council that for the past month tarsealing was done on Hamilton Street footpath, between Revell and Sewell Streets. Revell Street was-done from the Dunedin Hotel down to the Town Hall. The drain carrying the refuse from the Abattoir was cleared where it discharges on the beach, and timbered to prevent the sand from blocking it. A block was cleared in the drain at the corner of Bealey and Hampden Streets, and several gratings were put on down pipes. The water occupied a lot. of time during the month, many leaks were repaired. A blow out at Tucket Flat at night and a blow out at the corner of Hall and Hampden Streets on Sunday, 16th, which were repaired. Two chains of pipes were lowered at Stribblings Creek on the lake road, owing to the road being graded, left the water pipes above ground; we trenched and lowered them about two feet under the surface. A water" connection was put in in Livingstone Street, and connections renewed at the Railway Hotel, and Mr Peake’s. in Brittan Street. Mr J. Cutbush had his annual holidays in the former part of the month and the Sexton in the latter part, Mr Cutbush filling his place when required. The water ranged from 4ft Gin to Bft in the reservoir for the month. The action of the Chairman of the Public Works Committee in arranging for the cleaning up of Cass Square and the tar-seal-ing of the track was approved. It was stated that the progress of the work was being held up owing to the calls for repairs to the water supply line in various .places all over the town. The January abattoir fees here were £7l 17s, there having been examined 12 cows, 23 heifers, 67 bullocks, 267 sheep, 98 lambs, C> pigs, 1 calf. The water supply continues to give some dissatisfaction. The Borough Works Committee Chairman, Cr. Orr, stated at last meeting the past month had been one of the most unsatisfactory I in connection with the life of the water pipes. The staff during 19 days of the present month had been engaged for IGB hours in repairing leakages. It was a very serious matter and deserved the immediate attention of the Council. I After considerable discussion it was reI solved that enquiries be made as to the best sort of iron pipes for water supply purposes and that the Council then take I into urgent consideration the best (means to be taken of safeguarding the water supply. The Mayor agreed that the wire binding of the wooden pipes was giving way and causing most of the trouble, and pointed out that though the life of the pipes as put down had 12 years to run, the cost of repairing was going to be increasingly large as the months go by and it. would be well to face at once the question c f an entire renewal of the pipe line.
