Bigger Outlay. PREMIER’S STATEMENT. (Recd. Jan. 12 at 7.40 p.m.) NEW YORK. Jan. 11. The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates and party arrived here this evening from England. They took train almost immediately for Montreal. In the course of a brief statement. Mr Coates foreshadowed a gradual i urease of New Zealanders per capita contribution for defence, until the amount, he said, “will compare favourably with that of the Mother CounMr Coates described the New Zealand Navy as “a unit of the Imperial Navy,” rather than as a complete organisation in itself. Ho expressed hi-; agreement with Air Bruce (Australian Premier) that the Dominion must share fully the cost of the Imperial defence, or else must “accept a. position of national inferiority.”
