FREEZING WORKS. MORE UNIONISTS ENGAGED. PALMERSTON NORTH, Dec. 7. The Lougbui-n Freezing Works this morning employed Union butchers. This was the first time since the strike Unionists were engaged there. Sixteen unionists supplentented the volunteer slaughtermen. Thirty in all were operating to-day, the full capacity being thirty-eight. FREEZERS RESUMPTION CRITICISM OF ALLIANCE HASTINGS, Dee. 9 .A t a meeting of freezing workers last evening to discuss the question of relationship to unionists and suer voluntary labour as is still employee* at two of the works, the Alliance Labour officials were freely criticised on their conduct of the recent freezing dispute. A motion of no confidence in the Alliance of Labour officials was carried, and it was also decided to ask Mr Roberts and Air Glover, Alliance officials, to come to Hastings and explain their actions. The matter of working with voluntary Labour was referred to a committer, and it is hoped that settlement will be arrived at by the volunteers joining the union. SOCIALISTS GAIN LARGELY. SWEDISH MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. The County Council elections which took place in Sweden in October have more than the usual significance because the councils form the electorate for the Upper Chamber of Parliament. The Socialist Party greatly improved its position, making a gain of 105,293 votes. Tho Communist vote dropped 4,429. These two parties have now 313 members .as against 290 in H‘i22 — a result disproportionate to the constituency gains. BIRTH CONTROL. BRITISH LABOUeFpARTY’S ATTI TUDE. At tho British Labour Party’s Annual Conference at Margate a resolution from Manchester reversing last year’s declaration relating to birth control was defeated by 2,466,000 votes to 707,000. The effect of this was a refusal to discuss any resolutions on the matter. ■ Afterwards, however, by a vote of 1,056,000 to 1,620,000 the conference “referred back” some remarks the executive had made about tho question in its report. Boiled down, the conference declined to make a pronouncement one way or tho other on the matter.
