HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING, The monthly meeting cf th'.' Greymouth Harbour Board was lield. last evening. Present: Messrs J. Steer (chairman), W. Leitch, J. McLean, G E. Perkins, J. Byall and G. A. Perry. The Treasury Department remitted wharfage amounting to £979 19s.

The Hon. G. J. Anderson wrote advising that the Board’s protest in reference to the Harbours’ Amendment Bill, introduced by Air Monteith, ALP., will receive careful consideration'. In this connection Air J. O’Brien, AI.P., wrote that as the Bill merely allowed an appeal Board to be set up if the Board or employees so desired, and as it provided some protection for an employee if unjustly dismissed or kept back, he must support the Bill.—The letters were received. The stationmaster drew attention to the condition of the trailing bogiewheels of the loco. “Ahaura. ” These required renewing before the loco, could work on Government lines. —The matter was referred to the Engineer. The Secretary, Marine Department, forwarded copies of general harbour regulations, providing that every Board sh ill supply and keep readily accessibl? on every wharf under its control, a stretclier for use in ease of accident in the holds of evey ship berthed lliereat. A fine of £2O is provided as a. penalty in ease of failure. In regard to the foregoing, the Harbours’ Association secretary wrote pointing out that ships, and not Hat bom- Boards should be made responsible for the supply of stretchers for working in the holds of vessels —Th? matter was referred to the Harbour Master. Advice was forwarded from the liar bours’ Association to the effect that the tenth annual conference of Harbour Boards representatives would be held in Dunedin on March 4th next.—The letter was received.

The Secretary of the Grey Waterside Workers’ Union applied for the use of the Public waiting Room in the Shelter Hall, as a living room for the caretaker, as the railway was not now using it.—The matter was referred to the overseer, with -instructions to report to the next meeting. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The Engineer reported that 7000 tens of stone, about 75 per cent, of which was first-class, had been brought down ill Cobden quarry on July 17. The line on the North Tip was in fair order to the-stagwig and further repair work was being carried out. Waterpipes limi been placed over Hie Cobden bridg > to the quarry. The weighbridge was now under repair. The boiler of the 20 ton stationary crane had been eon demned by the Inspector of Machinery However, there was no need to replace this at present, as the crane would not be required. HARBOUR MASTER’S REPORT.

The Harbour Master reported that during- the greater part cf the month the bar had been very bad. The average depths for the month were: Bar, 19fi -in; river, 21ft. The shipping return for July was, inward, .15,211 tons; outwards, 13,573 tons. The dredge was ready for commission, being equipped for making a voyage.
