AUSTRALIA’S NEED
A SUPPLY OF TIMBER. AFFORESTATION PROPOSED. MELBOURNE, August 8. Mr Bruce, in u memorandum on the soft woods of Australia, directs attention to the fact that there are only eight hundred million superficial feet of soft woods standing in Queensland to-day. At the present rate of cutting, this will last eight years. Large quantities of soft woods will have to be imported from overseas. Referring to afforestation in Australia, he points out that the figures regarding the plantations are very depressing reading. New South Wales, eight square miles; Victoria, 21; Queensland two: South Australia 40; West Australia two and a-half; only by a well directed scheme cun the timber shortage which confrdnts us be averted, says Mr Bruce. The Federal Government views the present forestry situation as one of the most important prolSfems to be solved. It proposes by the establishment uf a Commonwealth School of Forestry to provide means of training the necessary peTsoiuiel to carry out this great work.
