DUTCH SENSATION
ARREST FOR MURDER. (Received June 24 at 7.1(1 p.m.) (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association.) HAGUE, June 24. A remarkable story is associated with the arrest, of Gerrit Varcnhorst, the son of wealthy parents, on a charge ol murdering a compatriot, Delwd and his wife. Var_ ('iihorst, while studying in London, became involved in a smart circle, and then drifted into a. hotel business. He was suspected of participation in the White Slave traffic, and finally was deported. He returned in 191(1, and was again deported. He returned in 1917, and was searching for the Delwds, whom he accused of taking the jiroceeds from his hotel. Varenhorst attempted to asphyxiate the pair l>y in|ertii]g a gas pipe in their bedroom, and for this he was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment. H.e served seven years, and then renewed his search for the .Delwds. visiting America and EngI: nd. and finally Holland, where he located them. He broke into their house, and it is alleged he murdered them. He did not attempt to escape.
